How to Save Money at Pearl Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They helped us and gave our dog a lot of love until he closed his eyes for the last time. He enjoyed his last meal and was even given half of someone's dinner because they quickly fell in love with him. It was intense and sad and unexpected to say goodbye but their professionalism and compassion helped us process this tough experience with more ease. Thank you all ❤️

Pearl Animal Hospital has been a great place to take my senior cat. She has a few complex conditions, and they were able to discuss them all in detail with me at her first appt. The vet techs especially made my kitty feel safe, she was purring for the whole visit (the vet couldn’t even hear her heart beat because she was purring too much)! Last Saturday morning, I woke up to find my cat Cora in bad shape. I called Pearl Animal Hospital, and the receptionist was very kind and sympathetic. She went to check with the vet on call, and told me they could see her in about 2 hours. I’m so appreciative to them for helping my baby so quickly. I asked her if Cora could come to the clinic in a cat bed instead of a carrier, and they told me whatever is most comfortable for her. When I got there, the receptionist brought us right back into a quiet room. The vet tech (a different one than our last visit) was so kind to us both and helped Cora feel at ease. Our vet was so caring. She answered any questions I had in great detail and listened to my concerns. I’ll always be grateful for the care that Cora received here. The vet told me I had made the right decision to bring Cora in. This really helped to ease my mind. They walked me through each step of the process and were so sweet and gentle with her. She passed very peacefully thanks to them. This vet clinic is definitely on the pricier side. From my experience, the quality of care is worth it. They are great at explaining the breakdown of the charges. They have a tablet with the prices broken down. If you decide you don’t want something, they will delete it from the total price. Thank you Pearl Animal Hospital for being so sweet to my cat, and helping her during her golden years!

They really take care of my dog. The compassion and patience for her is wonderful. My dog loves both the techs and the vet.

We followed the doctor that has been seeing my dog since 2013 from another clinic to this clinic. For the past 5 years, we have had all my dog's vaccines, dental procedures, regular check ups, senior screening and any random care needed done at Pearl Animal Hospital. Unfortunately we have decided to seek care elsewhere due to the fact that this clinic has taken on so many patients that they are not able to see their longtime, regular clients in a timely manner for urgent matters. Several times over the last couple of years, we have had instances where our dog has been extremely sick and needing more urgent care, yet PAH has not been able to see him. They have offered to book a regular appointments 3-4 weeks out... which is not helpful for immediate illnesses. After the most recent attempt to secure an urgent care appointment for my sick dog and being told it was not possible, I ended up calling his old clinic and they were able to get him in within 24 hours, no questions asked. Because I expect to be able to be able to have my dog not just seen by his regular vet for expensive planned dental procedures and regular vaccinations & check ups, but also when illnesses pop up unexpectedly, we will be switching back to his old clinic. Even though it's farther, it's worth it knowing that when he's sick, he's able to be seen.

TL;DR : Go somewhere else We’ve been with PAH for years and at first they were great, but now they price gouge to the extreme, ($900-$1500 for a spay when everyone else is charging ~$600) are lacking in communication (Failed to let me know I needed to schedule a booster and then tried to charge me to start over) and seemingly do not care. (New vet traumatized my very sweet easy going kitty and then blamed it on her and charged me for drugs - then when she had a teeth cleaning they gave her WAY too many drugs) Also they won’t accept their flea meds back unless I schedule a “chat” with them. I’ve had cats my entire life and am confident I know how to apply flea meds and how to de-flea my house and cats. Your meds don’t work 🙄 Almost forgot - They told me I couldn’t get my cat spayed while she’s in heat and said it could last a month at a time and that we would have to wait until a MONTH after she was in heat. Checked with another vet who said that wasn’t a thing and when I schedule with a different vet from that they never asked or mentioned anything in regards to her being in heat. Also the front desk staff can be super snotty.
