How to Save Money at Northwest Neighborhood Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Meghan Hook and her team are wonderful!! I first started taking my cat here in 2019, and from the start I have been so impressed by this clinic. Everyone at this clinic has been great consistently over the last four years. Dr. Hook has been one of the kindest, most helpful and reliable providers my cat has had in his 12 years. I feel comfortable asking questions and discussing treatment options with her and never feel rushed in our appointments. We’ve had a rough few years with a couple health issues and referrals to specialists, and Dr. Hook has consistently kept up to date on my pet’s care after every visit and been a reliable source for any questions or concerns that I’ve had. I cannot recommend Dr. Hook and her team at NW Neighborhood enough!

I was blocked by this vet. My senior dog, that I have had since he was 2 & 1/2 months was mistreated at this facility. I referred multitudes of people before I noted this. I called and requested support, after having multitudes of acupuncture & laser therapy treatments for my dog. He will be 16 years old 10/1/23. I called with a specific question when he had a health concern. They never responded & I am unable to contact them. This vet also owns Dove Lewis. I have met multitudes of people who have had horrific experiences at Dove Lewis & I have also (two very specific ones, including one that accelerated my other dog’s health when was in a hospice state). I would stay away from Dr. Purl & this vet clinic. She is extremely unethical, although gifted in veterinary medicine. It is unfortunate.

Awesome place. They use positive reinforcement to help animals overcome their fear. Have been bringing my dogs here for 10 years. They really care about the animals they treat and are happy to answer questions & make recommendations.

I feel bad writing this review but after much consideration, I think it's necessary and I hope NW Neighborhood's management team will consider this feedback: I moved to Portland a few years ago and have been coming to this vet for over two years now. The staff are very professional and I always feel like my dogs are treated with the utmost care. I have received some advice a few times that felt very canned and not really in the best interest of my dogs, however. Here are a few of my experiences: 1.) I was concerned about my dog's heat cycle. I later learned it is totally normal for your dog to bleed again a few months after she goes into her initial cycle, but I didn't know this at the time so I was concerned. The vet never told me this, led me to believe the additional bleeding was concerning, I paid for multiple visits and a sanitary spray. They also tested her, misquoted me the price and told me it was $257, when it was $600. They met me in the middle for the misquote as it happened over the phone, but I still feel like this whole situation was wrong and I was misled by the vet. 2.) I was not told an appointment would qualify as "urgent care" and I would be charged extra. (this was a bit of a surprise as my previous vet would fit us in or suggest emailed pictures sometimes to treat) I was told I would also get results within 30 min and never heard a word, I had to call back. 3.) The bill for my dog's dental cleaning was over $1000 (she is a tiny Chihuahua, not a giant dog mind you). My previous vet had never charged me more than $500 for the service. 4.) The vet recommended Iams dog food instead of the meticulous raw food diet I feed my dog who is in excellent health. I still can't wrap my head around this. If you have great insurance and plenty of money to spend, I'm sure this place is great, but I am not sure I could recommend them.

Writing as a new patient who has had two senior cats in for routine wellness checks. I have seen two doctors, and had an especially great experience with Dr. Hook. The doctor talked through all of my questions about "what if and what next" and the team of techs were wonderful with my cat, who is not the most compliant patient.
