How to Save Money at VEG ER for Pets

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This place is AMAZING! Our dog’s previous vet misdiagnosed him and we weren’t sure where to go and what to do, given that it was a weekend and last minute. On a whim we took him to VEG in White Plains. Our dog Basil was seen by Dr. King-Smith. Upon examining him, she knew immediately in less than 5 minutes that he would need to undergo a procedure and the severity of the infection. She was not only able to identify the issue right away, but she was so calm, caring and attentive to our dog. Within an hour, Basil was undergoing a procedure and was diagnosed correctly on the spot! Luckily for VEG, they were able to relieve pain from our dog and assure us that the infection was resolved and determined the cause of the bleeding. I’ve never seen a staff of doctors, nurses and people so centered on caring for animals with time sensitivity with the utmost importance. We are so thankful for this group of people and commend them for the effort they put into Basil, and clearly every patient that walks through the door. Not enough thanks can go out to VEG!! If you’re thinking about going, be safe than sorry and GOO!!!

I brought in my golden for a laceration. I was attended on arrival but the wait was a bit longer than expected. Once we started the procedure the nurses, Jessica and the doctor was very very good. They were respectful, professional and answered all my questions. Jessica even went a step further to help me getting my golden into the car.

In a panic with my sick cat I wasn’t sure where to take her. I am so happy to I took her to VEG. With there open floor plan I was able to be by her side with all her treatments and later when they recommend her to stay the night I felt comfortable leaving her. Every staff member that I had an Interaction with was amazing. They welcomed me to visit/call 24hrs. And they never made me feel uncomfortable.

The Staff is GREAT (esp guy at front desk with a beard) but The Prices are OUTRAGEOUS!!! 🙀 I took my beloved 5year old kitty "Tiger" 🐯there because it seemed he had something lodged in his throat...possibly a Hairball? The Techs were fine. And The Doc did a decent history. But when it came to possible "treatment" it was so ALARMIST: $600 Xrays 🩻 $160 Pain Meds 💊💊 $150 MISC??? Then The Doc claimed they might have to do EMERGENCY SURGERY that night...for possibly $10,000!!!! WHAT?! 🙀 Tiger's temp was Normal (100.8F) his respiration rate just a tiny bit low and he was NOT IN PAIN. I've had many cats prior and know pain when I see it. I've also worked in HUMAN HOSPITALS for many years and am certified in Human CPR. Emergency Surgery is reserved for Emergency Cases. All Tiger needed was some hairball remedy which they did NOT HAVE. I paid my $205 and left. I think the $5 was for the "complementary" drinks & treats. They have a great waiting area. 😄 The next day my own Vet gave🐯hairball remedy & an appetite stimulant since he did not eat much for 2 days. Plus he had all his shots & trimmed his nails. TOTAL FEE: $400 for everything. Tiger coughed up big time and today he ate his food normally! 😻 I only recommend VEG if you have a TRULY SERIOUS Emergency and have LOTS of 💰 I love my Kitty A LOT 😻 but if it was going to cost $11,000 to "save him" I would have no choice but to put him To Sleep. I simply cannot afford the exorbitant fees and alarmist pricing. I understand medical staff must be Extra Careful these days to avoid lawsuits etc, but they should also not prey upon The Sympathies of Pet Owners. It is a very conflicting time in Pet Care due to all The Advances...but the saddest part IMHO is how animals get better care than most Humans do these days. In my next life I'm coming back as a cute 🐶 in a wealthy neighborhood!

I can not begin to say how incredibly professional the staff is. I was greeted at the door and Kitty was immediately taken for treatment. The doctors, assistants and quite frankly the entire staff displayed an enormous amount of caring and compassion. They explained every step of the treatment process, answered questions and kept me informed on Kitty's progress. I couldn't have asked for better because they are the best. Thank you Dr. Pardo and the entire staff.
