How to Save Money at Northside Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Salemi and his staff are gentle, patient and very thorough with my dog Kodak. I’m always informed about the best ways to care for him and keep him healthy. Everyone is also great with handling him when he gets agitated.

I've been meaning to write this review since my first time I visited Northside Animal Hospital. This has been such a delight and relief to have an amazing caring Dr and all his associates. Dr. Salemi is an absolute sweetheart. He takes such good care of my little Frankie a.k.a "peanut". I had her spayed her a year ago. I was beyond nervous between the surgery and her being my first dog. I had no idea what to expect. She did great and when I was freaking out because I was worried about her, Dr. Salemi let me call anytime to reassure me this was all normal and part of her healing process! You can feel his warmth, kindness, and how much he cares about your fur baby as well as you. Even wishing me happy mother's day when I saw him last. Mr. Shawn who always answers your calls is a dream come true! He will stay on the phone with me as long as I need. Never rush me off. Answer every question I can possibly think of. He is also kind and patient. He has a great knowledge of animals as well. I can't say enough about him as well. Lastly ever woman that works alongside Dr. Salemi are also incredible. They hold my frankie as if she was theirs. They soothe her when she is getting a shot. Hug her. Pet her. Make me feel calm and reassured she is in the best hands I could find for her. Frankie is really my sisters dog. She had gotten her and then passed away a year later from Cancer. Before she passed away she asked me to take Frankie. I said yes instantly. It's been my last connection to my sister. She was my everything and I miss her everyday. Seeing Frankie brings me joy on the worst days and makes me feel my sister is still with me. I say this little story to share how much it means to have Dr. Salemi and his group take care of my Frankie. I am very attached to her and love her with all my heart. So when I say they are beyond great, Please give them a try. I promise you won't regret it. Especially if you are absolutely in love with your fur babies as I am. If you are reading this Dr. Salemi and associates, Thank you for always caring for us :). See you soon!

Best place on the entire island. I don't trust anyone with my pets the way I trust these people. They've taken care of 4 of my rabbits and my 2 dogs over the past 7 years and the staff is always kind professional friendly and patient and caring. I appreciate them so much and I wouldn't recommend people go anywhere else trust is very important. They don't overcharge for anything and they do a thorough job. They are truly amazing people and I love them and my pets have been brought back to me falling asleep in their arms for being so calm and loved. I am more grateful to Dr. Salemi and the entire staff than I could ever be.
