How to Save Money at Fifth Avenue Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

HUGE shout out to Fifth Avenue Veterinary Hospital (91st and 5th ave) and Dr Appel. My cat needed urgent surgery within 24 hours and was going to die if she didn’t get it, she is only two years old. I called everywhere left and right, phone log filled with unknown numbers… Everyone needed an appointment when she needed to be helped urgently (she had a dead kitten inside her that she couldn’t give birth to and it was going to break down and decompose inside her). My primary vet finally opened (which they’re never helpful or nice to begin with), just to tell me they couldn’t do it off the bat because I didn’t have an appointment and I ended up crying on the phone with them lol but they then gave me this vets phone number (finally something good came from them) and Dr Appel took my cat in the same day and worked with us!! VERGE needed $4,000 up front yet THIS vet charged me only a bit less but also only requires 75 percent due at drop off and the rest can be paid when picked up which was literally a matter of life or death for her since not many people have the whole amount to pay in the moment (we already paid a lot to get diagnosis for her at VERG). If you’re looking for a good vet in bay ridge who truly cares about your animals please give them a shot 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Doctor Appel would truly do the best he could do to help the pets that came through his door. With many of the cases presented to him, he was able to figure out the next best course of action, or at least put the owner's pet on the track to figuring it out. He also doesn't dance around the matter of what you need to do for your pets, which is best so that they can get the care they need before things get worse; he also lets it be YOUR choice for what further measures are taken. The staff also work hard to help out of all of the amazing owners that come through the door, so please be understanding if the office is busy. Even if there is a wait, the Doctor will make sure to see it through that your pet feels better as long as you allow for it.

I am from Connecticut and found out my dog had pyometra. We were told she only had a couple hours to live and every single vet we called told us they could not help or that it would be almost $10,000 for emergency surgery. After calling around 40 vets, I found Dr. Appel who picked right up at 11 pm. I told him that I would rush to New York from CT during a snow storm and he waited up for us to get there until 2 am. He performed surgery almost as soon as we got there and his price was very reasonable. He saved her life. We can not be more grateful for Dr.Appel for saving one of our family members. Thank you from Lola as well (our dog).

wish i knew what a nightmare this place was years ago when my dog was having an emergency. she was only four years old and she had some sort of obstruction or something, the doctor never clarified and when i asked if he could he clearer, he had told me that he knows more than me and i should just listen while laughing. i was younger back then and this was my first dog so i was rightfully freaking out and letting what i thought was a professional do his work. he said she had to stay overnight and i was worried sick because the surgery she needed apparently couldn’t be done to save her life until she got better. by the morning she had passed and we had to come say goodbye. only saw the doctor to pay the bill and then he vanished. there was no sorry for your loss or any compassion at all. every time i remind myself i wish i had convinced my parents to take her somewhere else where maybe she could’ve had her life saved. so many things i should’ve done differently and i beat myself up for. i didn’t have time to read reviews and didn’t even know that there was reviews at the time. please find a better place for your pets, this still haunts me to this day and reading all of the reviews makes me sick to my stomach as so many other people experienced this man.
