How to Save Money at Dermatology for Animals - Omaha

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Overall everyone I spoke to was lovely. They seemed to be very knowledgable and I was very relieved to get their diagnosis for my dog. However, I did not realize the cost and I can never afford to go here again. If you get paid by hour this place is probably not for you unforunately.

We brought our dog in for skin issues a few months ago. The vet had very poor “bedside manner” (very curt, asked the exact same questions multiple times, made a comment about “not wanting anymore of his blood line” in the world). The vet tech gave our dog a treat without asking our permission - after we had him on very strict diet for over a month and gaslit me about the situation, and finally they tried to charge us 4x what our regular vet would charge for a biopsy. They did zero check-ins after the appointment. And gave us really no news we didn’t already know during our approximately $500+ appointment. Id recommend google over going back this office, honestly.

This has been the most awesome experience! My Pretty Girl has been struggling with her skin for a couple of years didn’t even know dermatologists existed for pets but I’m glad my veterinarian recommended her to see Dr Irwin best decision I can 100% say was the best. Thank u to the staff and to all for their support and patience with explaining everything with kindness.

This is my opinion and experience with Dermatology for Animals- Omaha. We are extremely disappointed in our visit. (A little background we've had our puppy since the December 19 and saw the specialist Jan 6th. When we rescued our puppy he's covered in a fungal infection, hair loss flakey/itchy skin and treated for mites. So itchy he was gnawing off his own feet) We drove two hours paid $442 for a specialist to refuse any skin scrapping. All she did was diagnosis our 8 week old puppy with a double ear infection, and suggest we put an 8 week old puppy on a plant based elimination diet. We haven't even had the puppy one month to have any suspicion on what yet needs to be eliminated from his diet given how malnourished he was. The vet also couldn't tell us what kind of fungal infection our baby has. When I originally scheduled the appointment I was told that, included in the first $450 office visit was a skin scrapping and bloodwork (this info is also on the website) but once arrived was told that because the pup had no active lesions and was already given one does of Nexguard she would "save us money" by not skin scrapping. We paid $442 for a specialist to diagnosis an ear infection and not do any dermatology testing we were promised. We learned more about dermatology from our local veterinarian. With an 8 week old puppy a dermatologist should have been as proactive as possible. That should be the goal for any animal that walks through those doors. This was the most basic, disappointing vet care we've received from any veterinarian let alone a specialist. I did speak with the office manage who was very lovely but after reading other reviews. I'm getting the impression that this is pretty routine care from this establishment which is sad because the office staff originally seemed wonderful. Please save your money and find a good local vet. (We expected to see Dr. Irwin given her reviews and the website but unannounced to us or appointment was scheduled with Dr. Wheatcraft) honestly given the basic care he received I'd like a full refund for everything but his ear treatment given how misleading the care was. We're extremely disappointed (update) I was contacted by the company they asked if I would delete my review without offering any compensation to do so, all the veterinarian did they we say was treat an ear infection. Does your dermatologist treat your ears? Still extremely disappointed and highly recommend you find a good local vet, this was a complete waste of time and money)
