How to Save Money at Caravan Vet

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Andrea and Jenna were so kind and gentle with our beloved senior cats! Their professionalism and care gave us such comfort. Our cats hadn’t been to a vet in many years and the Caravan Vet folks were helpful in getting the cats a proper medication to relax them enough to have a proper assessment. We will definitely use their services in the future! Thank you !

Our German Shepherd Dog has been a patient at Caravan Vet for over eleven years. Dr. Christa has been her veterinarian for her entire life. Our girl has had several challenging medical conditions during her life, and I have been so impressed not only with the quality of care she has received, but also with the level of concern and compassion that Dr. Christa has shown. She is always responsive when questions come up, and has been a real partner with us as we have worked through some complicated medical issues. I feel very fortunate that we chose Caravan vet when our dog was weeks old and highly recommend them!

Dr. Christa Williams, owner of Caravan Vet, and her whole staff are extremely competent veterinary health professionals. Not only that, but they have a large, fully equipped, customized box-truck that they use to actually do house calls for customers in St. Louis Park and Minneapolis at a reasonable extra charge. This is in addition to a standard clinic you can go to if you prefer. Dr. Christa's knowledge of dogs and cats is astonishing. We've been taking our sweet little fur-boy Mozey to them for about 11 years now, and we also took our beloved feline kiddo Baby to them. I think the best and quickest way to communicate how impressive Dr. Christa's knowledge is to relay a story. Please read to the end to show why I've been astonished by Dr. Christa: Mozey one day developed this very alarming problem. He was walking with his spine turned so that his hind end was bent forward, so that from the top his body was shaped like a "J" We weren't able to get him to Caravan right away, and had to go to a different vet clinic. This second clinic does extensive work on dogs and cats, and I am sure that they are competent veterinary professionals, as well. The second clinic examined him. There were two veterinarians there, each with more than ten years of experience. They couldn't find anything wrong from the exam, so they had to sedate him in order to take an x-ray. Even after the x-ray, the second clinic couldn't determine what was wrong. Mozey's fur-mom and I were deeply concerned and worried. Dr. Christa--making a house call to us--examined Mozey, how he walked, etc. Without exaggeration, in 15 minutes Dr. Christa knew the answer: it was a minor problem: his knee cap had slipped out of joint, and the odd way he walked was compensation for that. She pushed the knee cap back in place, gave us instructions for what to do if it happened again. It was a HUGE relief! As far as her support staff, they've all been knowledgeable and wonderful, too. They have a breadth of skills and experience that is very impressive. Lastly, I want to say how caring and compassionate Dr. Christa and her veterinary technician were when we had to euthanize Baby. They came to our house so that Baby would be as comfortable as possible. It was a gift that was soothing during such a difficult experience. I highly recommend that you have Caravan Vet be the clinic you use for your pet's health care. Go to the standard clinic or have a house call for convenience and a look at their amazing mobile clinic.

We have two elderly cats who, understandably, don't want to leave the house. Having Caravan Vet come to us has been wonderful! Everyone we've interacted with from Caravan has been so gentle and caring with our sweet senior cats. I highly recommend them!
