How to Save Money at APAWS Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Phenomenal! Everyone from the front desk clerks to the Veterinarians were so kind and truly treated my pet with care. My pet's procedure was quick and was very well done. The facility is super clean and they've created an overall calm environment. I would highly recommend taking your pet here!!

Took my dog in who has unfortunately got into items she shouldn’t have ate. Yes she is a rare breed but less than 6months ago I paid over 7000 for emergency surgery for her getting into tinsel we had up for Christmas decorations. Went in yesterday for a x ray to confirm if she could pass what she ate or if surgery would be required. I can’t afford another surgery 4-6k worth on a dog. X ray and visit was for almost nothing we could not determine if she had a blockage. This is when my trip takes an unprofessional turn. The vet then tried to give me options on giving the dog up to a rescue that would pay for the surgery. (This option is typically for people who can’t afford any vet bill on a young dog.) when I informed her no I don’t want those contacts she became visibly aggravated and left the room. For contents my this is not a cheap animal and we have spent over 10000 on this dog keeping her healthy and happy. When I went to the desk to check out. I made a comment that I understood what the system was but to offer that to a person who has spent a lot of money keeping there dog healthy that was unprofessional. I was told she isn’t a complaint department and then made a snob comment under her breath saying maybe you should keep her from eating this. This dog is a lab they eat everything especially with young children that Adore her. I won’t ever go back to this place there prices aren’t much better than other local vets.

If I could add a few stars, I would.... This place is GREAT! Clean, great staff (and plenty of staff) and about 1/2 the cost of other vets I've used....They brought the invoice to review before doing any services on my cat and I actually hugged the assistant and said "This is it"???? The Doctor is wonderful and not trying to rush you out the door! Absolutely recommend!!! They have a customer for life :-)

I brought in my dog for a rabies shot, nail trim, and anal gland expression. I asked for a quote over the phone but they wouldn't give me one. On the day of the appointment, I was told my dog needed sedatives for the nail trim and was asked to reschedule the appointment. The sedatives were $50. I brought my dog back sedated and they still would not trim her nails... Isn't that what a vet is trained to do? Even with difficult dogs? My dog is small, 19 pounds, and nervous but never aggressive. So then why did they make me sedate her and pay $50 for the pills? They recommended not to squeeze her anal glands because she is 1 year old and they told us that is too young. So we said OK, don't do them, and had it removed from the quote. Next, they tried to add on other shots and things which they never mentioned over the phone, trying to charge us over $200 USD. They tried to add heartworm medicine even though she was not due for a test until 2025. They also charge a $45 "exam". They claimed the vet that did the exam looked at our dog's teeth and said they looked great even though they are clearly not. She is 1 year old and only has one fang. She recently lost one due to trauma, and the bottom 2 fangs are baby teeth and broken so I doubt the vet even took a look inside her mouth. Next, they told us they did squeeze her anal glands even though THEY had just advised against it minutes ago. This place is very overpriced and very unprofessional. Will not be returning.
