How to Save Money at Metropolitan Animal Emergency and Specialty Center, A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The people here are AMAZING. They saved my pup's life. He swallowed a rope toy which ended up lodged in his intestinal tract. He was in Friday afternoon, released 24 hours later. The front desk staff is very professional, friendly, and attentive. The doctors, what can I say about them? This is where the amazing comes in. Both Dr. Yang and Dr. Ringley were very attentive, detail oriented. The way they spoke and explained the situation gave off confidence in that they knew how to address the issue while displaying care for my dog. My pup is now recovering comfortably and even after his procedure I called for follow-up questions and they went out of their way to help me. Thank you so much for everything you did!

I cannot say enough good things about this place. I brought in our very badly injured Weimaraner in the middle of the night. The veterinarian on duty was calm and straightforward and clearly explained to me what she would be doing. Every staff member I encountered was kind, empathetic and helpful. I was there four different times over two weeks - (I) the evening with the emergency, (ii) picking up our dog a day later, (iii) returning days later to get his drain removed, and (is) finally when he had his many stitches removed. The entire team was top-notch and made a traumatic experience much less traumatic. Our dog, two+ weeks later, is recovering beautifully. Thank you all so much!

From the moment I arrived at the hospital I was greeted with compassion and comforted by the staff. The Doctor was very kind and helpful in making the most difficult decision I have ever made. I can not think of a more loving way to say goodbye to my little boy. Metropolitan Animal Hospital made it possible and Im forever grateful.

Kind, professional, accessible. The staff and doctors communicated clearly about our dog’s health issue and gave us options for her care. When I had a follow up question the next day they were responsive and helpful. We came here years ago with our other dog and we will definitely come again as needed. I highly recommend Metropolitan Animal Emergency hospital!

I cannot say enough good things about this place, and that's coming from someone who is incredibly picky about vets and places that see my furry children. The staff is absolutely wonderful, beyond kind, knowledgable, sweet, patient, and all the good things. 10/10 top notch staff, both for beside manner and knowledge in treating tricky cases. (And for how they handle sweet fur babies and awful moments) I took my beloved cat here when she suddenly had breathing issues and wasn't eating or drinking for the past 24 hours. They took her back immediately, and unfortunately they caught that she was in heart failure and had lung cancer that had spread all over her body. The doctors were incredibly kind and patient with me and my fur baby (even as I was sobbing hysterically at the news, she was completely normal prior, zero symptoms) and went over all of the options. We tried everything we could, but her heart failure was too far along and she wasn't able to be stabilized. (At no fault of the doctors!) She quickly declined, and the staff was extremely kind in helping me make decisions, without being pushy whatsoever. When it was clear that I only had moments left with her, they were beyond wonderful in facilitating a very peaceful goodbye in a quiet room alone. They let my family and I hold her alone for as long as we wanted, and gave us all the time in the world to say our goodbyes. I am extremely grateful for this place and the vets and staff here, I couldn't have asked for a kinder gentler more peaceful way to end an extremely horrible and sudden day. The staff members who met my fur baby also sent thoughtful handwritten notes a couple days later. Bottom line - this place is incredibly kind and wonderful, take your fur babies here if you ever need to.
