How to Save Money at Cornerstone Animal Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They care more about $$$ than your pet. First, they were about to send us home without knowing what was wrong. When my dog (Joe) yawned, they accidentally saw the mass in the back of Joe's mouth. The mass is obviously very fast growing. The only choice of treatments was to do a biopsy or don't do a biopsy. They did the biopsy, sold me some meds for him, and told me to feed him baby food. A $500 bill. I couldn't pay the entire bill that day, so they refused to send the biopsy to the lab until "paid in full" even after I emphasized I would pay half today and the balance in 11 days. A lousy 11 days. They didn't care. They put the $250 above Joe's life. They could've used the $250 I paid for the lab work, then waited 11 days for their portion... they wouldn't. After paying half ($250) I can't afford to have him put to rest so, unless this antibiotic works wonders, I have to watch Joe die of malnutrition, dehydration, and in pain, as he slowly chokes to death on the mass. All because they couldn't wait 11 days for their precious $250. I understand this is a business, but don't pretend it's about the pets when it's actually about the almighty dollar. I'm praying the meds help, but the vet said it doesn't look good. There's not much else I can do for him and nothing else they will do without more money, and I'm afraid more money in 11 days (plus 9 days to get the results) will be too late. But do they care ? Obviously not. It was too late.... The photo is of Joe. He didn't make it. He was only 6.5 yrs old.

I have an older pet with monthly care. All the staff here are pleasant, compassionate, and professional. Not only have they been giving great care to my animal, they have shown empathy for me and taking time to answer my questions and explain in detail the issues that arise so I can make the most informed decisions for my animal. I want my animal to have a great quality of life and with this team and I, we have the same goal. Great place, worth checking out.

I have had 2 great experiences with them! They staff is super friendly and so compassionate with every fur baby that walks through their door. About a year ago I had to make a hard decision about putting my fur baby Midnight down. Never been to this clinic before a friend of my husband’s recommended them. From first conversation over the phone and answering every question to giving us space a time to say our goodbyes to our fur baby that were super sweet and understanding. I love them for that! Today I took my puppy to get his first round of shots and exam they were super sweet and loving to my fur baby. Took their time and made my puppy feel safe. They didn’t rush with him or me. They again answered all my questions and asked all kinds of questions to get to know him. I highly recommend them! I’m so glad that we have choose them to take care of our fur babies! Thank you so much for make us feel welcomed and loved!
