How to Save Money at Lakeside Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I hope Ashton reads this. I brought a family members pet in to be treated for parvo. Unfortunately he did not make it, but I will never forget how kind hearted and knowledgeable Ashton was. This vet is very lucky to have someone like her to work for them. Thank you Ashton so much for answering all my questions and concerns and doing what you could to help us. I believe you are truly in the right career path and pet owners appreciate people like you.

Slightly long but HONEST review: Lakeside Veterinary Hospital deserves MORE than five stars. I HIGHLY recommend Lakeside Veterinary Hospital in Carbondale, IL. Though they are no longer open 24/7 since Covid, I am ENDLESSLY grateful for their continued services and support. A living nightmare occurred before my eyes when my sister’s sweet corgi, Arya, was viciously attacked by an off leash pitbull. We called Lakeside after the attack, getting approval to bring her in for treatment. I cannot begin to say enough positive things about Dr. Verbeck, Courtney, and every other employee at Lakeside Veterinary Hospital. Every employee we spoke to assisted us with compassion and provided support and understanding during the stressful and uncertain journey of getting Arya back to a point of stable health. We could not have been more grateful that Lakeside Veterinary Hospital had the ability to take her on as a patient and their willingness to perform surgery on her for hours, in an effort to save her life. If not for the care she received from Lakeside, I do not believe that Arya would be alive. During the entirety of her treatment, Lakeside stayed in contact with us to answer any questions we had and to request updates. She was treated AMAZINGLY by their team of professionals. It has been one month since the attack but thanks to Lakeside Veterinary Hospital, Arya is improving and healing better than we EVER could have hoped for. We are forever grateful to Lakeside Veterinary Hospital and would HIGHLY recommend calling them in an emergency situation. I am beyond thankful that the facility had the ability to take on her case, as I recognize that an emergency veterinary hospital is similar - in aspects - to an emergency room for people. Long wait times should be expected, especially given that emergency services triage cases based upon severity and urgency of the injury. In addition, though they do advertise and provide life saving, quality, emergency care to animal patients, that does not mean that their facility is without limits. Just as many human Covid patients were waiting days to weeks to be transferred to another hospital for treatment, due to there being NO available hospital beds, an emergency veterinary hospital cannot take on every case that calls if they do not have the space or employees to properly handle and address each emergency situation or issue. Lakeside Veterinary Hospital is composed of a team of true and caring professionals, but they are also individual people with their own feelings, trying their best to provide top tier - often life saving - care to our beloved fur babies. I imagine their heart breaks every single time that they have to turn someone away but the bottom line is that they are a facility with limited providers and capabilities, just like any other hospital. It would likely be impossible for them to take on every case that called; however, I highly encourage anyone to MAKE that call in an emergency situation because if they have the ability to help, their services and the care they provide is without comparison. I 100% believe they are NOT in it for the money. Though their prices may appear high, people should recognize that it is an emergency hospital and higher prices are completely understandable and fair. If they did not require full payment from clients and took on every charity case that called, they would likely struggle to stay in business and then wouldn’t be able to help any animals at all. The love people have for their fur babies goes very deep but it is truly sad and disheartening to read and witness the amount of abuse which people in the industry of veterinary medicine receive. It is entirely undeserved, as they should be appreciated and positively recognized for the services they provide. A huge thank you to Lakeside Veterinary Hospital for continuing to provide quality and life saving care for animals in an underserved area, especially concerning emergency situations! I would trust them with all six of my own fur babies. Top tier service!

Always helpful when I need a stray checked for a microchip. Emergency services are pretty pricey, but that's just the nature of emergency services. Staff are friendly and helpful. Keep in mind, like human emergency services, they triage patients based on urgency of need, so wait times can be pretty long sometimes if your pet isn't near death.

Our lab dolly swallowed a treble fish hook while we were fishing out on the lake. Called lakeside right away and we rushed dolly to them. The team at lakeside met us at the door and tool dolly into the back right away. Took xrays and showed that the hook made its way down to dollys larynx. This was a difficult spot due to the location and not being able to see. Took the Dr 15 min to get the hook out. Highly recommend

When our Miniature Schnauzer got loose and was subsequently hit by a car about 7PM in Harrisburg, the driver took her to Lakeside Veterinary Hospital as they had staff their until 11PM. I was contacted through their network of contacts and went there immediately. The staff were great, well trained, and friendly. The facility was clean and tidy. They were able to do X-Rays and a full blood workup within a short timeframe and we were able to go home in a couple of hours. Although we were lucky she had no major injuries, it was wonderful that Lakeside was available.
