How to Save Money at Hometown Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

All I can say is wow. We recently transferred our vet care here because we hadn’t had the best experience at our previous vet. We also got a new dog so this was the perfect time. I am so incredibly impressed by this clinic. We were able to get in within a day or two. The space itself is welcoming and the waiting room was plenty big for our pup to explore. Our vet assistant, Ashton, was so incredibly knowledgeable that she was the veterinarian at first. Not to mention she was incredibly personable and answered all of our questions including checking prices for various vaccines. The vet herself, Dr. Baxter, was kind, knowledgeable, and it was clear she read our dog’s history before she walked in the room. We spent more time with her than I do even at a “human” clinic. She gave us great recommendations without pressuring us to get things we didn’t feel like we needed. Both her and Ashton were willing to work with us around vaccine schedules and different modalities of flea/tick prevention. Waiting times were MUCH better than any other vet I have gone to. It just feels like they work incredibly hard to create a comfortable environment with committed and knowledgeable people. They also gave us a call the next day to check in on our pup. Will definitely be bringing our other dog here. I don’t normally get inspired to write a good review on Google, but this one was well deserved.

Dr. Baxter and her team have taken care of my crew for as long as Hometown Animal Clinic has been open. They provide compassionate care and are upfront about costs and treatment strategies. I know my critters are in good hands. I’m a customer for life.

So far I definitely have to give them my stamp of approval! I moved here from another State about 1 1/2 years ago and hated to leave the veterinary I used for years and years there. I was recommended to a clinic in Mountain Home and I could Not believe how awful they were. So I came to Hometown. They treated the animals with respect and didn't ignore them to talk to me. They approached the dogs and spoke to them as well as me. The Dr. I had, got down on the floor with the dogs (probably to help them feel more at ease) and my dogs were both very happy to get the attention. They showed no anxiety for being at a veterinary clinic, even with all the other animals smells that are always present. Doc spent quite a bit of time with us getting to know us and our life style to better be able to treat them for our individual living conditions. I will continue to go here and recommend this place to others.

These guys are the best! They can always get my floof in quickly whenever needed and they genuinely care! They send reminders about appointments, annuals, and other marketing emails that are so helpful! So affordable but still high quality care. We've been coming here almost 3 years and they have been the absolute best!

I am so happy to have found Dr Baxter. When my older dog was showing suspicious symptoms, she saw him right away and helped develop a treatment plan that has been working for his long-term issues. She has also been amazing with my new puppy and his care. I feel confident when I drop my dogs off that they are in good hands and she will treat them with best judgement and practices. I think I get vet anxiety worse than my dogs do, but not here. I always leave feeling informed and at ease. I wish I found her sooner! And a special shout out to her support staff, who are an absolutely amazing group of people.
