How to Save on Veterinary Costs at Pahoa Animal Hospital

Preventive care

Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.

Compare prescription pricing

Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.

Consider pet insurance

Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

My regular vet for many years has been Seske in Keaau. She is a great vet and a spectacular person. Currently she is away on vacation. I called the Pahoa vet today to see about getting an opinion on an issue my dog is having. They wanted a $500 up front deposit to see my dog. Never heard of a vet, or even a doctor, asking for something like that. The money is not the issue, it's the attitude! No thanks!

These people are angels. We took our 12 year old pit bull baby to see Dr. Bill after she was diagnosed, by another doctor, with a large Splenic Mass in her abdomen. This other doctor told us there was nothing we could do and she would die - soon. We couldn't just take that opinion so we scheduled an emergency appointment at the then new Pahoa Animal Hospital. Dr. Bill had experience with this condition and scheduled us for surgery the very next business day. She was in surgery for under an hour and they expertly and successfully removed a 12 lb mass and she has been living happily ever since (its been over a year). They were so incredibly thorough through every aspect of our experience with them. When it was all over, they sent parts of the mass to different labs to test for cancer - and found none. Everyone at Pahoa Animal Hospital is wonderful. They all truly care for our fur babies and it shows in every interaction. Prices are reasonable and they can always get you in if you have an emergency - that will cost you a bit extra but they're seriously the only place in the east side you can even get an emergency appointment. We are so deeply grateful for these wonderful humans and we just can't say enough good things about them. 💗

I was really looking forward to having a vet in Pahoa but the service was very unprofessional. I waited for months on the wait list to become a patient. Then they said I have to make a wellness appt to establish being a patient, ok fine. Keep in mind I was mainly doing this to have an emergency vet close to home but at my appt, I find out they don't even have after hours emergency sevices....ummm okay....then they sold me some medication for my dogs itchy paws but the staff didn't even know what it was. I asked what kind of med it was, and the tech handed me a brochure that also didn't say what it was. The vet spent less then 60 secs looking at my dog and mostly to give him treats. It was very chaotic bc they just kept giving him treats then pushed me to checkout. No one explained what the medicine was (Apoquel, $50 for 15 tablets! !) So when I got home I had to do my own research then I find out its a powerful immune system suppressant with serious side effects so I went back to return the unopened bottle and they refused to refund me and accept the return. This is very unprofessional and dangerous they would push this on me without even explaining what the drug is then refusing to accept it back after I had to research it on my own. They were more concerned with feeding my dog tons of treats then discussing informed options for treatment and the seriousness of the drugs they give. I'll stick to more frequent bathing of his paws and not put him on a dangerous immune suppressant. So I paid $100 for them to overfeed my dog treats for about 20 mins. They also gave me quote for teeth cleaning of about $1,000! The mngr claimed I signed a form that says "no returns" but that's not true, she also said "well it's on our website" so beware they may push pills on you that the staff know nothing about then refuse to allow you to return it even unopened and no emergency services so guess I'll have to stick to the hilo or keaau vets.

We sought out Pahoa Animal Hospital about two years or so ago on an emergency visit. Our Veterinarian at the time was located in Kohala. The staff and Veterinarians were so kind and professional. Our fur boy got taken cared of in the right way! Our fur babies have increased and we have kept our medical relationship with them growing too. From wellness care, emergency telephone care, whelping, puppies, infections, vaccinations, physical therapy, laser therapy, science and naturopathic care. Shelly and Pua and the front staff have always been patient and tried their best to accommodate. Dr. Kimi and Dr Lei have been the Veterinarians that we have had most contact with for our fur babies. They and their Vet Techs are just great! Professional, smart, patient (especially when we fur parents are in stress mode LOL) and compassionate. They are great listeners and give the fur babies the best possible care! There are also other Veterinarians available and many more services too much to mention! We live about an hour away and it is most worth it to us to travel to have the great care that our fur babies are given at Pahoa Animal Hospital.

They made great suggestions, were patient with my questions, and have drank and candid answers. I'm happy to have a very so close to my home and look forward to working with them on the future. Plus, @ola_baby didn't seem afraid or worried as you can see from the pictures where she's sleeping.
