How to Save Money at Lavista Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Great vet. We are recently moved here and looked for a vet close by. Probably the first time we haven’t had to wait to see the vet. Very friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. We went there of a yearly physical and discovered some dental issues which they will take care of. Prices seem reasonable.

The staff is nice and knowledgeable. I have a bulldog that was having some skin and ear issues, they diagnosed correctly and my big boy is back to top health!! Thank you!

I started bringing my dogs here when I moved to this area a year or so ago. I had only been in for the initial exam and vaccinations until recently, and had no real feeling for them - positive or negative. Then a week ago I took my dog in due to a cough and congested breathing. The vet did a brief exam, decided the cough and congestion were due to allergies but also informed me that he had developed a heart murmur - “not significant enough to require medication.” I was sent home with an antihistamine that included a steroid and no follow-up appointment. I faithfully gave the meds twice a day for a week before calling to schedule a follow up. I explained my concern that the cough and congestion had gotten no better, and in fact seemed worse. I was offered a cancellation the following morning that I couldn’t make, then told it would be 4 days before he could be seen. I watched helplessly for 2 days as he just got worse, then finally took him to an emergency vet hospital. They did an x-ray right away and discovered a seriously enlarged heart and fluid around his heart (something the vet later admitted could’ve been made worse by the prednisone he prescribed). My dog was immediately admitted and started on supplemental oxygen. They had to keep him overnight to drain the fluid from around his heart and provide constant oxygen. I struggle to understand - knowing what I know now - how congestive heart failure could be misidentified as allergies and an “insignificant” heart murmur that didn’t even merit treatment. (Btw, This same office euthanized my other dog a month earlier which makes me even more wary…) I no longer trust the competency of this vet and will drive the additional miles to return to my previous vet. Proceed with caution.

We had a really great visit today with our sweet rescue pittie! We’ve been battling with his allergies since we brought him home & have felt so heartbroken & defeated. Our previous vet had been using the same regiment (5 visits in less than 7 months) - with no relief whatsoever, but today, Dr. Clint took a totally different approach & we feel confident he is going to finally get some relief! The office got us in less than 24 hours & everyone was super kind! We have found our boy’s new vet home! Thank you, Lavista Animal Hospital!

Best veterinarian in Georgia! My Rottweiler needed emergency surgery and she’s not too fond of the vets office, they had everything under control and got my dog in right on time. They saved my dog and her puppy. I’m forever grateful to the doctors, vet techs and everyone else who helped us that day! Thank you so much for the caring, and super fast veterinarian care for my dog and puppy!
