How to Save Money at Southeast Veterinary Referral Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If your dog is in dire need of care, do NOT send them here. I experienced the heartbreaking loss of my beautiful 10 month old Bully because of their neglect and carelessness. My dog had a respiratory virus where she was super sick, had troubles breathing, and hadn’t drank water or eaten. As soon as I brought her in, the veterinarian looked at me in disgust and said “first of all, why is your dog so overweight?” Which was not true as she was a very strong and healthy bully- all muscle, no fat. My dog and I were waiting in the room for their care for over an hour until I opened up a credit card because they forced me to pay $3200 before care even took place. Even though it was an EMERGENCY. I was waiting and waiting, wondering why my dog was not being seen, only until my credit card was approved did they come see her. After leaving my dog in their care, they called me and hour and a half (around 7:30pm) after taking her in saying they finally gave her fluids. I called again around 10:30pm to hear updates, to learn her breathing had gotten worse. Then at 2:30am they called, bluntly asking, “So I’m just calling to ask, if you had to make a decision on Lila… what would that be.” I was completely confused and asked what they meant by “a decision”, and what decision I had to make for my dog, given they had no explanation for what they called for. After asking multiple times what that meant, they said “well, Lila went into cardiac arrest and passed away.” So there was no decision to make. I was left with a bill of $2800 for them to neglect my dog, and only give her an IV for treatment, which was given 3 hours after we entered the hospital. I’ve had to deal with the heartbreak of losing my daughter due to neglect and carelessness, and left with a new credit card of $2800 that I’ve had to struggle to pay for. I hope this never happens to anyone and their loved ones, and seeing their other reviews, they should be shut down. ALSO when I came to pick up her ashes, the people at the front desk (as I was crying) were cracking jokes behind the desk and couldn’t even act professional or sympathetic for 2 minutes while i painstakingly picked up my daughters remains. From the bottom of my heart, I hope these people find a different career where they never have to care for any other living beings. They are absolutely cruel. (First photo is a week prior vs when she went in for care)

Brought my dog in yesterday for eating a chew toy months ago and it was still in her stomach which the doctor said was a rare situation and could only be solved through surgery. They treated Roxy so well and Dr. Kiddell was very attentive with updates and I was even refunded for any treatments she did not need. Overall amazing treatment from this hospital they truly saved Roxys life.

I am very grateful for the professional and timely care my pet and I received during a recent trip to Southeast Veterinary Hospital. My dog is highly allergic to bees and was stung causing an emergency visit. I alerted the staff of my impending arrival; the details aptly recorded/communicated to those on staff. They were ready for us when we arrived: Brian quickly rush her off for care and returned shortly to update me on her status. He clearly and kindly advised next steps and answered my questions/concerns which put me at ease. Many thanks to you all at SVRC for expertly and adeptly tending to my dog's emergency. I would love to never have to return but if I do, I am glad I am not far from your accomplished facility.

My son took my dog there, after seeing my vet due to my dog throwing up, losing weight and barely eating. X-ray had shown some sort of infection, but wanted to rule out obstruction . At this clinic they did an ultrasound and proposed exploratory abdominal surgery with a cost ranging from $4800 to $6800. My son needed to confer with me as this was costly and we needed to consider other places for the surgery. They pushed for euthanasia then, he was still hesitant as we needed to get a proposal from other places. Yes, my dog needed urgent care, but this was a damn lot of money and we needed to find a place asap to do the surgery at a more reasonable price. We didn’t just want to put our dog down without first trying to see what , if anything could be done. This was a Wednesday. Our dog, yes had lost weight, had been to our vet twice, was still walking, jumping, still a joy to be around.. we could not put her down just without trying although we knew the possibility that we would eventually have to existed. My son brought her back home and I began calling around, and found Helping Hands in Orlando. They would do the surgery on Friday morning early for $3000 less that the lower end price given by this clinic. It would be a 4 hour drive but we were ready. Animal services showed up at my house on Thursday. This clinic had called animal services on us, because we refused their services due to the high prices and wanted other options. They implied our dog was on the verge of death that very minute. They may think they were doing our dog a favor for fear of neglect and need for medical attention but let me tell you, what is wrong here is that these people take advantage of pet owners in their time of need by charging ridiculous over priced medical procedures in quite challenging times They don’t deserve this 1 star I’m forced to rate..We made the trip to Orlando less than 48 hours after visiting this clinic, she was walking and bouncing and licking us, but during the surgery, we had to make the difficult decision to have her euthanized, as she would not have recovered.. It was a quiet, long trip back home. Please don’t let any vet clinic bully you into making careful medical decisions for your pet. There are better options out there. We found it.

I highly, and without any hesitation, recommend SVRC as an emergency veterinary clinic for all your pet needs. Over a period of approximately one month, Jack spent about 8 nights under medical supervision/care with the SVRC team due to having acute kidney injury and a reopened surgical incision caused by complications after a bladder stone removal surgery. I can truly say that the team of veterinarians, nurses, and technicians took care of Jack as if he were their own pet, and I have no doubts that he received the most optimal veterinary care and attention throughout his time there. SVRC is comprised of specialized veterinarians who are as knowledgable as they are sympathetic, and staff that is highly attentive to your needs and concerns. Additionally, the clinic is very clean, wait times are not unreasonable, and they encourage visits at any point during your pet's stay. Their prices are not cheap, but you cannot expect 24/7 veterinary attention, overnight doctor/tech supervision, and surgical/internal medicine services, to be cheap. Most importantly, you cannot put a price to your pet's health, and seeing Jack return to his normal, healthy self was certainly worth every penny. I am very thankful for everyone who was a part of Jack's recovery, and I confidently recommend this clinic to anyone with a pet emergency.
