How to Save Money at Kentmere Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Been taking various cats here for years. I guess Dr. Coogan retired as I never see him anymore. Drs. Snyder & Ireland took over the reins I think. Both competent vets, both showing a willingness to listen to the pet owner before diagnosis. I would recommend this practice.

I was very pleased with the car we got from Dr Ireland. We took one of the older cats in for problems breathing through his nose. The doctor came in after a short, very reasonable wait and examined him. They did blood work but didn't push for more expensive advanced tests like a lot of vets do. I was very surprised when the vet herself called the next day to discuss the test results and see if i had any questions. She also asked that i call and give an update on his condition the next week. All in all, i would feel confident in bringing our pets here

Wonderful vet. I used another local vet for my last cat, while my partner used Kentmere for our dog. I switched my cat to Kentmere last summer, when my regular vet couldn’t get him in soon enough. He was diagnosed there with an untreatable cancer, and passed about a month after his first visit there, but the staff & Dr Ireland were absolutely amazing, so compassionate, during his last weeks. As soon as I adopted my current kitten, I didn’t even think twice, I chose to take her to Kentmere. Another thing I appreciate about them is their not hard selling Science Diet; my old vet pushed this SO hard on us, like every single ill could be cured by this food!

Kentmere has been caring for our animals for 20 years. Dr. Coogan and his staff have always offered thorough and compassionate service. We have never thought Dr. Coogan ordered unnecessary labs or advised unnecessary treatment. He has always been open and honest about what needs to be done. The support staff at Kentmere reflects Dr. Coogan's veterinary compassion and care.

Dr Coogan is and has always been the absolute world's best veterinarian. He always treated my babies as if they were his own. When Sweetie had a mass draining, found during a grooming, I immediately called Dr. Coogan and he worked me into his very overbooked schedule (same day) and gave me an antibiotic to make her comfortable. Sadly, for all of us who have looked to Dr. Coogan to compassionately care for our babies, the practice has been sold to another veterinarian. I needed to see Dr. Coogan 2 weeks ago, since my youngest baby was newly lethargic, and I scheduled an appt. The new staff (2) could not find my records!! I was then told that all the records had been deleted and I would need to be seen as a new pet parent!! Thus, my appt was cancelled with Dr. Coogan, per new owners rules, and my MUFFIN could not be seen for 3 weeks!! Needless to say, I was not and could not wait 3 weeks!! Sadly, Muffin has had labs, severely anemic, urine test, ultrasound and now pending a biopsy of lymph nodes which most likely is lymphoma. I’m already being advised of our options for Muffin as I do my own research as well…Unfortunately, Kentmere is disappointing decades long pet parents and patients, many who are also neighbors, and it is very sad.
