How to Save Money at First State Urgent Vet

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I WAS SCAMMED! DO NOT GO HERE! My kitten had a seizure and couldn’t stop panting so i took her here. I had no idea what was going on. They took her in, little did i know that to even enter the place is $150. They told me her temperature was 105 degrees. Next they charged me for antibiotics. And then asked me if i wanted her blood work done as well. I said of course. They took me and my sister to a private room. Then when the assistant came back to the room to show me how much the total was. I actually stared at it for a solid minute because I thought it was a joke. Nope. I was charged $618 for all that. To top it all off, there was no diagnosis. When the doctor told me that she tried to convince me that “when you go to your doctor you don’t always get an answer do you?” I said sarcastically ,” Usually I do.” And that’s when the people at check in turned around to see if i was gonna cause a ruckus. I asked the doctor, “ so after all of that, after $618, there is no diagnosis.” Then she had the balls to mention you should take her into hospitalization so to clearly get a diagnosis. She said that ranges from $1500 to $2000. I said give me my cat. I was so furious, i had to have my sister use my card and pay for me so i wouldn’t go back in and cuss out that doctor. DO NOT GO HERE! WASTE OF YOUR MONEY! NO DIAGNOSIS!

I am blown away by the care that my Orange Tabby received. He came in for a respiratory infection. The vet and techs were so kind. Though the cost was higher than I anticipated, I cannot deny how much relief I felt when Leo got a proper consultation. He's feeling better already. Thank you so much for helping my baby!

This facility was amazing from the start of my visit to the end. Everyone was so kind and professional. Shout out to the reception crew, Dr. Downs and her tech, and everyone who makes this place work so well. My cat's care was both thorough and affordable. He's feeling better after a visit here! Highly recommend if you're not able to get into your regular vet on short notice.

For a pet parent with an emergency, this is the place to go!! I couldn’t be more appreciative of Jenny & Doctor Lawrie. They are absolutely LOVELY. The reason for going to an emergency/urgent care vet is never a good time, but they made the experience more than comfortable. They made sure we understood exactly what her condition was, where it could start heading, and why they suggested each part of the treatment. Jenny took such good care of her while she was getting her medication and answered all of my paranoid questions. The staff at the front was welcoming and efficient in getting her paperwork done and getting her back into a room as soon as possible. We came in around 6:15 (they close at 7) and even though we were there well after close, they gave us the same level of care and didn’t rush us out the door. Our bill was nowhere near what it would’ve been at an emergency vet & I felt that the price was reasonable for the circumstances. I am so thankful for their time and support, our girl is already improving!

I’m a first time puppy mom and I was scared of taking him somewhere and I spend hours look at reviews for all the place nearby. But when I call and talk to the front desk lady I knew this were we going. Everyone there were so sweet and very helpful. especially doctor down and her vet tech and I do not remember her name, but they are absolutely the sweetest people in the world even though it’s a 40 minute drive from me, I refuse to go anywhere else in a emergency from here on out.
