How to Save Money at Norwalk Veterinary Hospital and The Boarding House
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had been going to this practice for 9 years with my English Bulldog. In fact, Dr Charles Duffy helped deliver him because bulldogs need C- sections. I unfortunately to put my dog down over Xmas because I found out through Cornell Vet ER that he was riddled with cancer( confirmed by necropsy). What bothers me is that I did not receive a phone call or card with their condolences. The ER( that barely knew us), Chewy ( who delivered the dog food), and even the pet insurance company all sent cards. But not one word from the practice who knew us very well ( my bulldog was a frequent flier there…, the office knew the sound of my voice). No card, no phone call. Nothing. In fact, when I called the front desk and told them, they said they knew. I believe this was extraordinarily cold hearted. Beware.

I compared the vet my mother uses with this one and the treatment for similar issues was like night and day. I know things are tough right now, so I gave an extra star to be fair. But basically their response was to see a specialist. I'm not sure why you'd bother to see them at all if you need a specialist for common ailments.

Amazing vets and staff! I’ve had my dog Chase here since we adopted him at 10 weeks. No matter which vet you see, they are all loving, caring and most importantly knowledgeable. Never an issue to get an appointment. Always have an answer to any concern. Wouldn’t take my dog elsewhere.

I boarded my dog here and got her groomed. She came back happy, healthy, and with a great haircut! The only this I wish is that they had a camera system where you could watch your dog, or if they could send some photos/videos of your dog when you're away (granted I didn't ask them to but it would be a nice addition if they offered that). I also wish there were more photos on their page of their facilities and what it looks like on the inside, I think that would help new people like me choosing a place to board their dog when they're away. Other than that, my dog seemed to have a great time!

I recently moved to the area and did a lot of research for a vet to care for my 7 month old puppy. I was highly impressed reading about the practice of Dr Janice Duffy and the scope of animal care provided by these vets. My first appointment was up to everything said and Dr. Duffy was extremely knowledgeable, caring and made me feel very confident that I would have a great vet for my dog. She spent significant time with us and the staff were pleasant and efficient. A number of months later my dog had stomach problems and I called for an appointment. Nothing was available for three weeks and I questioned about care for sick animals. The secretary stated this was a well animal practice, and sick animals had to go to emergency care. I was somewhat shocked and no amount of discussion and complaint dissuaded this staff person. When it came time for my dogs annual wellness exam and shots I decided to give the practice another try since I had such a good first experience. Again we saw Dr. J. Duffy who was pleasant and when questioned stated the practice does have sick animal slots and rarely is care denied.. She spent less than 5 minutes on a so called wellness physical exam, that entailed 5 shots, looking in my dogs eyes and nothing else. - not the ears, no listening to his heart etc, She had the tech take him for a $17 'pedicure", and while she was ready to leave the room we managed to get in a few questions about neutering and dew claws. That was that-visit over. My bill came to over $700 which included heartworm meds that were $50 more than the same sold by Chewy. Disappointing -yes. Concerning enough that I dont trust this practice and the possibility of future care. Maybe it was a bad day, but this was certainly expensive bad care. Looking elsewhere- there are a lot of vets around here.
