How to Save Money at Murphy Avenue Pet Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my 5 month old kitten here for the first time because she was sick and I was so surprised at how amazing this vet office is. Everyone was really helpful and sweet with my scared standoffish kitten. This isn’t the type of vet that will demand that you get all kinds of exams done and run up a bill. But they’re very knowledgeable and you can tell they care about the animals and will recommend exactly what is needed for their well-being. I got the meds I needed and my little cat is doing great. Highly recommend this vet. They also have a separate side of the office for cats and dogs, which I really appreciated.

I'm leaving US, and before leaving I wanted to leave this review. We have been very pleased with Murphy Avenue Pet Clinic, and we just hope the we find someone similar where we are going! - The doctors are knowledgeable, frank and helpful and kind. - The reception and management has been top notch, always reachable, approachable and helpful. Professional to the very end and were clearly invested in helping us even when we were leaving the country and relocating. - Most of all, this is the first clinic where our pooch actually seemed excited to visit! That tells us more than anything else. He would still be anxious, but he remembers the gentleness, the treat, and would start wagging his tail everytime we visit. Thank you for befriending and taking care of our companion, Isaac the Cockapoo!

Our cat got sick really fast and we wanted to put her down ASAP so she wouldn't suffer. We called around several vets but none had same-day appointments. This clinic accommodated us by offering us an appointment during their staff lunch period. The vet and staff were very understanding and empathetic of our heartbreak and respected our wishes with care and kindness. We are very grateful for the staff of this clinic.

While I'm not one to leave negative ratings for businesses, the events that unfolded during my visit to Murphy Avenue Pet Clinic are too important not to share. I had scheduled a neuter for my husky 2 weeks in advance and proceeded with blood work as instructed, arriving promptly at his 7:45am appointment. I was initially told his surgery would be completed by 12pm, but as the afternoon wore on, there was no word from them. After reaching out, they informed me they had rescheduled his surgery for later in the day without any prior notice. To my surprise, they also called back to mentioned they wanted to conduct X-rays of his hips and his arms, adding a hefty $700 to the bill. This additional procedure was never discussed during my initial scheduling or even when I dropped my dog off for surgery. I was told if i declined, a future visit for this would be well over $1000 due to the need for additional anesthesia and a new visit. As for the most distressing part of the experience, when I saw my husky after the surgery, he was in distress, in and out of consciousness, crying, and unable to stand. I brought him to the car, only to discover that he was bleeding, causing me to take him back to the clinic as they were closing. The doctor applied more surgical glue, and I took him home. Throughout the night, he cried in pain, even with medication. The lack of communication from the clinic, other than a text about the X-ray results and the possibility of a hip replacement for my young dog, left me feeling traumatized. In the days that followed, I noticed the surgical spot was partially open, and my concerns grew. After sending photos to the clinic, they dismissively brushed it off as normal responding with simply a one-word email reply: "absolutely," suggesting everything was fine. Unfortunately, my worst fears were realized when, after 12 days, his incision reopened. They provided antibiotics as a precaution, but now he has developed an abscess in the same area leaving me with no choice but to seek assistance elsewhere. What's most disappointing is that the clinic showed no concern for my dog, whom they've known since he was a puppy. When I expressed my follow-up concerns, they attempted to charge me for coming in, rather than addressing the issues with the care my dog received. In response, I had to firmly demand my records, expressing that I would not pay for a service that had been lacking. The lack of any acknowledgment or apology from Murphy Ave pet clinic and Dr. Sawyer is deeply disheartening. I would have been understanding if they had simply shown a willingness to take responsibility and address the issues. I hate to write this review, but it hurt more watching my pet suffer. I hope it serves as a warning to others. Murphy Avenue Pet Clinic's lack of care and communication has left me distraught, I will not be returning.

I chose this vet out of convenience after moving to CA. I am thrilled with the level of care my cat has received thus far. Everyone has been friendly and helpful, especially when it comes to questions about medications and treatments.
