How to Save Money at Pacific and Santa Cruz Veterinary Specialists
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had such a good experience last night. A neighbor handed me a neo natal kitten late, and he needed some support. I also needed instruction on how to syringe feed. Summer really helped me out despite how busy they were. I also appreciate Sabrina for talking with me. I was panicked as to how to help this little kitten. I felt very supported in finding my way step by step.

I carried my dog in after he collapsed. Vet Tech comes out to get history and gets super judgy when I say my dog has never had bloodwork. I carried him to the back where he remained for over 3 hours with very little updates. When the vet came in to talk to us right off the bat she told us she did an ultrasound without our permission and then charged us for it. The staff made us feel like a terrible owners for not having pocket loads of cash. When we disagreed to pay their $2900 estimate for an overnight, they wrote on our dogs records that we refused medical care against doctors advice. Our dog was sent home with a raging infection, a fever and a $1000 bill. This place isnt in business for the care and love of your pet, they are just there to get as much money from you as they can. No compassion. We were never offered any sort of financial assistance as a low income family. Very disappointed.

I have always been extremely happy with service at Pacific Veterinary Hospital. Both of our dogs have had excellent care and the staff is both kind and supportive. My greatest praise goes out to Dr. Pressel for her outstanding care of our Nahla and keeping us informed of her daily fight for survival. She is an extraordinary physician. Thank you all.❤️

Thank you to the vets and techs and support staff at Pacific & Santa Cruz Emergency vet for their compassion and care. Our sweet pup was hit by a car and had extensive injuries to his back paws. The surgeon, Dr Kalff, was incredibly patient and informative and is clearly exceptionally skilled. It was a very long recovery and the standard of care never changed. We had universally positive experiences with the surgeons, vets, techs, and front office staff. ER vets are expensive and can have frustrating waits, but having spent many hours/days in their waiting room, l understand the difficulties and challenges they face. They remain kind and patient throughout. Do not hesitate to entrust your pet’s care to them. We are forever grateful.

Heros. Saved our beloved dog with an emergency splenectomy after we were given a heartbreaking diagnosis at our local vet. He beat the odds and was just diagnosed with a benign mass and will hopefully have many more years with us. To Dr. Robison, who was amazing and told us to go for the surgery, to Dr. Arbaugh who skillfully performed the life saving surgery, and Dr. Brady who cared for our grumpy boy after... along with all of the techs and staff, we are eternally thankful and grateful.
