How to Save Money at Port Hueneme Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We were referred to Dr. Armington by another vet so I knew we would be in good hands. Dr. A is very compassionate about her work, her patients, and the owners. She really takes the time to hear what you are saying and doesn't discredit what you are telling her. I appreciate how thorough she is and how invested she is in her patients. All of the staff are very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!

January 29 my husband and I woke up to a typical Wednesday morning. Fed the wolfies, and I kissed them goodbye. Not knowing that through the day our dogs lives would be intentionally taken. My husband was the first to arrive to find Luna had passed and he immediately rushed Levi to the Port Hueneme Animal Hospital, we were not helped and sent to the closest hospital Horizon. Keeping him alive with CPR. It was after work and I see missed calls. I call back to receive the awful news, by Gods grace I drove through traffic, tears and fears.. but I was too late. Levi passed away during the drive to the hospital. Our dogs were deliberately poisoned. My husband and I spent that night signing papers and looking into what to do with our wolfies. The pain was immensely felt and we sat there alone together. Holding each other in disbelief of the reality. We had to say our goodbyes - twice. Since then everyday has been a struggle. We hurt at the fact that our daily routines with them are gone. We even miss the shedding season that was upon us. To you it might sound absurd to be this affected by the loss of our “animals” but to us those dogs were our family. I’m still grieving them even though I know they are in heaven and in a much better place. What upsets me the most is that our dog Levi still had a fighting chance and was turned down here and instead of helping me by sending me to a hospital that can help they sent me to Horizon in Ventura when they could of sent me to the next closest hospital on Channel Islands, i found out later it was capable and fit to help in these situations. i don't recommend this hospital to any pet owner.

We've been taking our animals to Dr. Armington since 1992 on recommendation of a friend when we moved to the area from overseas, apparently just after she opened. She's taken care of our first cat Bumper. Then our dog Geordie for his entire 14 year life. Did surgery (I know) on my daughter's hamster. Also our 16 year old dog Fritzy who is still doing great. And now with our two new cats Loch and Peaty as well as my daughters two cats Charley and Mac when she's in town. Highly recommended.

So I’ve been coming to the Port Hueneme pet hospital and I genuinely always have a great experience, everyone is kind, it’s affordable and my dog never seems afraid (unlike other places we had tried) however I’m extremely disappointed that when returning a call I received a completely rude response for no reason to the point where the kids I was with made shocked faces at the way I was being spoken to. Rest assured I just said it’s fine have a good day and it’s time to look for a new vet.

We've been taking our 4 rescued dogs & 3 rescued cats to Dr. Arrington & her staff for over 16 years. Always a caring professional, they've kept our kids healthy. It's never about her pocketbook, but the welfare of our animals. We appreciate the consistent caring & care of not just our pets, but other customers "kids" as well.
