How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If I can give zero stars, I would. Milo goes to Banfield regularly. His last two visits were in July 2021 and September 2021. Last Sunday, January 23, Milo beat me on a race to the top of the stairs. Milo and I played the morning before he went to Banfield for a ROUTINE wellness check last Tuesday, January 25, at 11 am. I received a call at 1 pm from the doctor telling me that Milo was ok and his heart murmur had not changed. I asked to check Milo's coughing and see if he was healthy enough to have a dental cleaning. They said they would do an x-ray. At 3 pm, they called me back saying that Milo did not do well after the x-ray and was in heart failure, and is on oxygen. What the h*** happened? It looks like they applied undue stress on Milo to go into heart failure! I picked Milo up, and he was not breathing right. I took him to the ER pet hospital, where they told me that his heart had grown and that they could not do anything for him. Milo died at 9:23 pm that same evening. Then the next day, Banfield charged me for Milo's monthly wellness plan! I told them Milo was gone, but they said they would not refund my money. My Milo is gone, and they want me to pay for his wellness plan?! I am heartbroken.

I don't like that you can't go I'm with your dog, preventive plan is ok, price is not bad. The service over the phone has declined, I'm guessing short staffed. So far the most important thing my dog comes out calm.

Still receiving great care and saving a ton. After about 3 years, still happy and really like the staff in Pacifica. I've only had one mishap with scheduling. In a few years, I'd say that's pretty amazing. I did have a huge issue with the corporate billing department (out of the office)....But I never had to deal with the lady again, and the issue was revolved by somebody nice. As long as you really understand your care plan, there are no surprise costs. I've never been encouraged to spend money on unnecessary tests or services as I have at many other offices. I did opt to have my late kitty's surgery at a different vet, but only because I was able to afford a top surgeon in the area that was recommended. My current kitty did have a minor surgical procedure though, which went great. The staff also taught me how to care for wounds, etc at home. I really like the doctors my kitty has seen and it's helpful for my pet's sake to be able to use the same location to combat the stress of going in. I really recommend the care plan, the services included add up to much more elsewhere if you take full advantage.

The location in Pacifica is great! The staff very friendly and professional. The veterinarian, Dr. Regalado, is amazing! She genuinely cares for animals, very professional, understanding and friendly (we only seen Dr. Regalado). Our dog Bentley is 12 and has lots issues with his health :( but we know he is in good hands. We recommend this hospital.

I went here to get my puppy his vaccines and the staff is very friendly and efficient. They’re professional and debriefed me on what they were going to do that day. I feel at ease leaving my puppy with them as they are responsive, reliable with treatment, and answered all my questions. I brought my pup in for a drop off at 8:45 and he was all set to go by 11. He seemed pretty comfortable coming out except for all the new smells but all in all, I can vouch for this location! Note: I used to go to the Banfield on Gellert and had a horrible experience but I’ll be staying with this location as long as I can.
