How to Save Money at Avalon Animal Hospital & Bird Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My was handled with care. He was able to relax with the staff despite the fact he usually only likes the 4 main people in his life. I enjoy the convenience and how they teach me what to do to beat care for my dog child.

Amazing place, they do take a little long but it was well worth. The staff is very kind and they were very gentle with my fur baby. I have been bringing my parrot too.

This horrible business charges DOUBLE the price for medications compare to other vets around. When we decided to stop paying $200 for one bottle of Pimobendan from this vet and buy from Chewy for $82 instead, they refused to work with us and had the audacity to raise their voice over the phone telling us that “it is my PERSONAL law to not do what you ask”. What?! The owner of the dog asked them to add another name as the co-owner on the record, and they refused? The reason was “when the dog needs surgery later this person can disagree and refuse treatments”. First, that was good of the vet to say, but she should stop there instead of kept on saying “it is the law it is the law”. Second, where did she get the audacity to think she had any power in the decision making and kept lying even after we called her out on her lies? Oh right, she got the audacity from “caring” about our dog whom she’s refusing to approve Chewy’s prescription request because us bad dog owners are trying to pay over a thousand dollars for this life long medication. This vet has connections to the future where she foresees we will refuse treatment for the dog we have cared for for over 16 years and paying thousands more to keep her with us. The f up part is this exact vet told us to put our dog down a few months ago, while she’s been fine. We requested medical records and were told the “doctor” would need to approve it and it would take 3-5 business days, not even minding the dog is 16 years old and needs medication - this is their way of retaliation because we called the “doctor” out on her bs. She’s definitely flying v sky high power tripping in there.

For starters I'd like to say that I don't have anything bad to say about the level of customer service from the vet techs, they were all incredibly kind and helpful and were sympathetic to the situation. I brought a stray here that was doing poorly after a spay. The cat couldn't walk and was swollen, wasn't eating/drinking, had cold like symptoms, and wouldn't really move. I took her to this clinic out of sheer convenience, it is 2 minutes from my home, so I hadn't taken the time to read the reviews. I wish I would have because I could've saved $1100+. First visit, I was told nothing was really wrong with the cat other than the swelling, all her labs were normal, no diseases, x-rays looked good, no breaks or fractures. In total i paid ~1300 for labs, x-rays, treatment, antibiotics and pain meds in that first visit. I let the office know the meds weren't helping and that there was really no improvement. Went back for the follow up, vet tells me they can't figure out what's wrong with the cat therefore it needs to be opened up for exploratory surgery and to prepare myself that it's very likely the cat would need it's tail amputated. I asked the vet how in the world getting rid of the tail would help the cat walk again and to start eating again and was told there was no guarantee that it would even help in that regard. Immediately after they send out a quote for an additional 1700+ Dollars for this experimental surgery that was labeled as needed for an abscess, which the cat didn't have. Something felt wrong, I'm glad i had the good sense to decline this procedure and go elsewhere. Booked an appt to get a second opinion from a highly rated vet in Long Beach, and guess what was wrong with the cat?? She was severely allergic to the food I was feeding her! The visit was 60$ and i had them throw in some flea medication. Lesson learned. I ended up keeping my little stray kitty, especially after this whole ordeal, she is Healthy and happy and in the end I guess that's all that matters. Do with this information what you will.

I took my African Grey for boarding. I have used them before in the past and never had an issue. She was staying at the Torrance location, because they had construction going on at the Carson location. When I pulled up they were bringing her in. Once they brought her to me I checked her bowls and they were filthy dirty! I was so upset. I left instructions to clean her bowels two or three times a day. There was bird fences on her food. The water bowl was full of residue. There is no way they had cleaned her bowls as I instructed. One of her foot toys was on the cage floor covered in feces. I spoke to the manager named Natly. She had a very nonchalant attitude and was not apologetic. She glanced at the bowls and said I will speak to the staff. I asked who was her supervisor and she said the doctors. I asked to speak with one of them. She said they would be in at 3:00pm. There was a man standing in the back with sunglasses on watching, but didn't say anything. When I got home I looked them up online to see who where the doctor's. The docotor was there the entire time! He didn't say a word. They have several locations Carson, Torrance and Montery Park. Dr. Nesha was at the Montery Park location that day. I spoke with her and expressed how upset I was. She claims that her staff washed her bowls twice a day and that Nataly was a very good manager. I let her know I didnt appreciate that her partner was there and didn't step up when I asked to speak with Nataly's supervisor. She made an excuses for why he didn't didn't step in. I told her there is no way the bowls were cleaned as filthy as they were. She gave a dry apology and asked what would I like her to do. I asked for a blood test to make sure she didn't have any type of Infection and not be charged. She said oh I can't do that! I was so angry I just hung up.
