How to Save Money at Cimarron Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We took our new puppy in for a wellness check and everyone from the receptionist to the Vet and her assistant were wonderful. Our puppy was so comfortable that she laid down and fell asleep. The vet had tons of tips for us to keep our puppy stimulated and learning. We’ve found our new vet, definitely.

I'm grateful Cimarron Animal Hospital takes reactive and aggressive dogs, they absolutely do not have to for their own safety and I'm thankful there is a vet in town who does. However, I'm not sure how equipped they are to handle reactive and aggressive dogs. I just moved to town and looked into using them specifically because of their marketing that they're good with reactive/aggressive dogs. I put down on the new client form that my dog is reactive/aggressive and I will bring her muzzled, and she's always been sedated for vet appointments in the past. I called the office before our appointment to warn them about her and ask if there was anything else I should do, and to let them know she'll probably need to be sedated. They said they'd really like to give a try and work with her without sedation and there's nothing else I needed to do. When I got to our appointment, I again warned them that she's reactive/aggressive-- my concerns were dismissed, and then the vet tech and vet were very surprised the entire appointment that my dog was growling at them when they tried to put a thermometer in her butt, tried to take her paw and get between the toe pads, etc. They did eventually sedate her, but they said they had accidentally double-booked and didn't have time to let the sedation fully kick in before starting to work on her. I don't think they were able to do everything they needed to do because my dog wasn't fully sedated and it wasn't safe to fully work on her while she was still able to get up. We ended up having to take her to another hospital later when we realized her problem hadn't fully been solved (infection in her paw.) I appreciate their willingness to take on reactive/aggressive dogs, and the staff's safety should ALWAYS come first, but safety for staff should include fully sedating large aggressive dogs and taking client concerns about their dog's aggressiveness seriously. I was doing my best to tell them about my dog for both her comfort and the staff's safety. I've never had a vet clinic not take it seriously before, so this was just a disappointing appointment

Dr. Rory Keefer and staff went above and beyond to try to save our beloved Sylvester. It shows just how much they love animals and will do to help them. Sylvester ate possibly ate something and we are not out of the woods yet, but we are definitely in the best possible hands ever. I would highly recommend Cimarron Animal Hospital to everyone that needs animal care. We are most appreciative of their efforts and care. Thank you Dr. Keefer and all the staff, Claudia

This is my second review of Cimarron and their fantastic staff. This time I took my other cat Tigger and was seeing by Dr. Elisa Marusich who was also kind and knowledgeable, now Tigger is doing much better. The nurse technician Chelsea was very sweet and accommodating to my cat needs, she knows how to manage a nervous cat like mine, sweet, knowledgeable too. Thank you so much for all you have helped me with my cats! 🙏 💗 After many struggles helping my cat Vevi to get better, I came across in my search with Cimarron Animal Hospital. They are kind, helpful and honest wich is almost unusual on other facilities. Doctor Debra L. Bohnke was excellent, talked to me about different options and care for my cat. You go to other places and they see you like a bag full of money, not in Cimarron they are honest. Thank you for caring to get my baby Vevi better!

I was recommended by my mother & father & I will admit, they pointed me in the right direction! From the beginning until the moment I stepped out their door, I felt like my kitty was in great hands! My poor cat ended up peeing all over himself & pooping all over the cat carrier which you already know with a wet cat carrier , you add poop, & I can only tell you it was not a pretty sight! My cat was a hot mess when he got there & they not only gave him a little wet wipe bath, they also gave me a large towel to put him in in case he got cold from being wet. Then as the visit progressed, they somehow managed to clean the cat carrier out for me as well! My cat didn’t hiss, didn’t try to bite, was as cool as a cucumber!!! If you know my cat, that statement is a crazy one to make! He loves biting and hissing when he’s not doing what he wants to do, but at this clinic, he didn’t do a thing. Just sat there while they poked & prodded my poor kitty! Honestly that is what he was there for! Blood work & to tackle a potential killer before it strikes him! So the poking & prodding was a necessity! But none the less, great job to the entire staff, you all are killing it over here! I highly recommend this vet clinic! If you have an animal and you live on the East side of Tucson AZ, this is the vet you’ll want to take your baby too! . . I promise you’ll be impressed!
