How to Save Money at Tempe Lake Veterinary Clinic & Pet Resort

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I definitely won't be bringing my dogs to Tempe Lake Vet C and Pet Resort. I paid too much money for what my dogs received. I am very disappointed and don't recommend dogs lovers to bring them there for boarding. The regular runner is only designed for the handlers to clean it easy but not for the dogs to lay comfortably. There's a big canal in the middle that doesn't allow the dogs to lay flat on their bedding that I brought, which wasn't even used. They gave my dogs old rags, and in the only picture they sent in 9 days, my dogs look sad and helpless. My dogs feel secure sharing a kennel, but the runners they have are not designed well. The reports I got were the exact same for both dogs and not really accurate. Seems like the staff only copy/paste the reports. I'm really disappointed and I'm looking for a better boarding facility as we speak. Blaming the weather or an active dog is not what I want to hear. It's your business....do it right!

blah blah blah

This facility abused, neglected and harmed my dog. If I’d have not picked her up, I’m afraid she would have died. I gave them a happy, well loved and cared for dog and they gave me back a zonked out, despondent shell of a dog. The hospital manager Alina is stonewalling, sidestepping, back-channeling. She is supporting and hiding the abuse and harm of animals as a hospital manager. Think about that. DO NOT TAKE YOUR LOVED PET HERE!

They are friendly and courteous. I made an appointment and didn't have to wait long. My dog Cash is 17 years old and his Doctor was Dr. Reid. That's his first name. He was excellent. The staff is really great too! They treat him well and make us comfortable. I'm always nervous taking him in to the vets, but this Vet Clinic is calming and they take time to explain everything. I highly recommend them to any dog parent.

NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE FOR A NEW PUPPY I came to Tempe Vet Clinic with my 3 month old border collie for her first checkup after getting her from a breeder. The front staff was kind and welcoming but I was not pleased with how the technician handled her given it was her first time at this new facility. She was doing things to her that made her uncomfortable and did not take the time to try to make this first visit a pleasant experience. This was important to me as I didn't want her vet to be a place that brings her anxiety in the future. I was uncomfortable watching and asked if they had treats or peanut butter (so that I could at least aid in distracting her while she was being handled) and the tech only responded with "Yes" but did not even go to get a treat or offer any kind of toy or anything to make the experience a positive one for her. In addition, IF YOU GOT YOUR PUPPY FROM A BREEDER WHO ADMINISTERED THEIR OWN VACCINES, DO NOT GO TO THIS CLINIC. They do not recognize breeder or home-administered vaccines. (There are clinics in the valley who do recognize breeder administered vaccines, and even allow you to administer your own vaccines from home). This vet wanted to restart her entire vaccination schedule FROM SCRATCH. My puppy had gotten her second DAPP vaccine only 2 days prior to me taking her to the clinic and this vet administered an oral Bordetella vaccine during our appointment! Later on I got a referral to another vet clinic which does recognize breeder administered vaccines and they told me that administering Bordetella so close to her DAPP vaccine could have compromised the way her body responded to BOTH VACCINES. This has turned into such a mess. Please SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE, I highly recommend Applewood Vet Clinic as they DO recognize Breeder administered vaccines and they were VERY accommodating with going slow with a new puppy. After my friend's experience at this clinic, he friend took his puppy (sister to my puppy) to Applewood and his experience was completely different there than at this facility. The tech at Applewood that first saw her took the time to sit down with her to make sure she was comfortable approaching her BEFORE handling her, they prepared a cheesy lick-mat for her while they performed all their procedures on her and spent a whole 40 minutes explaining their recommendations in great detail (none of which the staff at Tempe did.) I want to give this clinic the benefit of a doubt, maybe they were in a rush that day. But I will not be returning and would not recommend this clinic.

My dog has been going here for a few years now since he has valley fever and it always takes forever to to get a prescription refill. I even tried having the prescription filled somewhere else but then the doctors here take ages to just get a prescription emailed to me since they don’t send to pharmacies via fax. So good luck.
