How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We walked in this place yesterday afternoon with our puppy she was perfectly fine and was able to move. Wanted a checkup and Once they gave her back to us, we got home she was super weak. She didn’t wanted to eat or try to move or walk at all. I noticed that she was so skinny. Couldn’t open her jaw. Couldn’t even play with our other dog. In the picture you clearly see she was fine that day before we took her in. I also noticed 4 dots on her neck like if they took a lot of blood out of her. I’m so mad of what they’ve done to her. And now she’s in a better place. Don’t recommend taking your little ones there at all. 0 stars for us.

I rescued a kitten from the street and it was experiencing some digestive issues. I took it to this Banfield to have him examined and tested for parasites. After a few days, I had to call them for the results. The girl said the results came back negative. I had to ask for a written report for my file which she then emailed to me. There was no further concern by the staff as to that the next test would be to find out what the digestive issues could be from. I paid $168.00 and the poor kitten is still having these issues (which was the reason I took him there) with no concern from Banfield staff. I will take him to a different vet. Inferior service from a veterinary clinic, for sure.

Never get their insurance plan. I brought in my 12 year old kitty and a friends chihuahua and started the plan for both. I told them the chihuahua was not my dog, too. Well, they just had check ups done. Basic blood work. The Chihuahua was 13 and she was getting distressed at night breathing so I made an appointment at a Banfield in Goodyear. My friend took her. When he arrived they told him sorry the appointment can't happen because no Vet came in today. So they sent him to a different place. Well, it wasn't a Banfield where he had insurance, it was a place that did blood work again and charged $787 for it, $150 just to have a Vet look at her. My friend called in a panic with the bill, so I had to cover it. I call Banfield and told them I was furious. I made an appointment, no doctor showed and they sent my confused friend to a high dollar vet. Not another Banfield that the appointment and blood work, already done 1 week before. Well, the Chihuahua died one month later. My kitty also passed around the same time. So I canceled my insurance. Now they say I owe them $1400. AND sent it to collections times 2. So they sent a collection for each animal separately that were on the same account. My credit took a dive 49 points. I am so pissed.

The receptionist with the double nose rings is very rude and needs a class in customer service. She is very un inviting and has a bad attitude. Even as I was being checked she was on a call with a customer being rude and I could tell the customer hung up on her.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET TO ANY BANFIELD LOCATION. They cancelled/rescheduled almost every appointment I’ve made then rescheduled us with different doctors who do not listen or even read the previous visit notes. Basically urgent care for your pet. Don’t expect a resolution. Their OWP plan is an absolute scam and doesn’t cover anything other than routine visits; they don’t make it clear that it’s a year contract. My poor dog has been battling extreme allergies for over a year with no resolution from Banfield. Banfield has been prescribing medications that are not fit for the size/weight of my dog and therefore, are not effective. My dog is worse off than he was when I started this journey with Banfield. I highly recommend finding a local vet. Western Animal Hospital is amazing and has an extremely knowledgeable vet. I learned more standing in the lobby than anything Banfield has ever provided me. Costs less out of pocket than Banfield AND they provide the medications needed at the office prior to leaving.
