How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Two days ago we called the Veterinary Emergency Group for help with our beautiful 11 year old Boston Terrier who was clearly not doing well. They were very helpful and suggested that we come on in. We walked in the door 30-45 minutes later (after the drive there) and the lady at the front desk said “this must be Lola” and took us right back. The next room was a large open area with multiple vets and assistants and reminded me of an ICU unit in a hospital. They began working on Lola by placing her on oxygen, starting an IV, and using a portable ultrasound device checked her heart and abdomen. After determining that she was in heart failure they made her comfortable in a warming bed and then had a very kind conversation with us about our options. We never felt rushed or pushed into anything. The care given to Lola was top notch and professional. The entire staff was amazing, patient, gentle, and loving. In the end, we made the decision to let her go. We were given all the time we needed to sit with Lola before and after in a beautiful private room filled with candles and soothing music, a couch and blankets for us to be as comfortable as possible. We are heartbroken but eternally grateful to the people at this clinic for their care and support. Thank you for your kindness and for making a horrible day a little more bearable.

We took our puppy, Gordie, there a week ago after he tried to eat sago palm. The team at VEG is phenomenal. They went above and beyond for our pup as well as my three kids. They taught all 3 of my kids about veterinarian medicine, giving them stethoscopes and allowing them to review specimens under the microscope. Amazing facility and amazing people who work there! They really made a scary experience less scary with their compassion and kindness. We are especially grateful to Dr. Valentine, Whitney and Carlin who took wonderful care of Gordie.

Thank you to Bijou’s Dr., Surgeon, nurses, front desk girls, and all the staff keeping things clean and running smoothly. You all made a very stressful and worrisome situation so much easier. I felt that Bijou was getting excellent care and I was fully supported and encouraged to participate with her care (which I loved being able to do). I can’t that all of you enough. Your open concept should be the standard of emergency vet care in my opinion. The animals and the owners all seemed way less stressed being able to be together in one room and see one another. Best emergency vet experience I’ve had. Highly highly highly recommend.

By far the best vet care experience we have had to date. Can’t say enough good about the staff and care team at the Chandler location. The open concept is something that should be an industry standard. Our dog and us personally were very well cared for during our time spent there. 10/10 I would highly recommend.

My dog was sadly involved in a dog fight and got a pretty good beating. The staff at VEG was great. They were all super nice and helpful. They got my girl cleaned, stitched up, and comfortable for the night until she could be seen by her regular vet the next morning. The facility was also very clean. My girl is now all healed and thanks the staff at VEG greatly for taking good care of her!
