How to Save Money at Village Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Chip and the veterinary technicians we worked with have been helpful and informative. I felt comfortable asking questions and receiving thorough answers from Dr. Chip and his staff. I would recommend Village Vet Clinic to any pet owner in the Auburn/Opelika area.

The Village Vet has been our vet of choice since 2019 and we have loved them! We see them monthly to manage my poodle-mix’s Addison’s disease and they have always been honest, kind, and welcoming! But tonight they went above and beyond for Gracie, the little tripod in the first picture! She wasn’t feeling well and something was wrong with an old ligament repair. Dr. Dan Kuykendall (Dr. K) and his staff stayed well past closing for X-rays and a quick procedure just to make sure Gracie started the weekend on the right foot! They made me feel so much better and did not act for one second like we were putting them out. I am so thankful for these doctors and their staff! It should be noted that we live 40 minutes away and The Village Vet is still our first choice!

I took our Blue Heeler to Village Veterinary Clinic as a new patient. Dr. Chip Kuykendall treated him. He was amazing! Dr. Chip spent an hour with us and checked Bogey from nose to tail and all in between. He explained everything he was doing and what Bogey needed. He gave us some medicated food for a gastric problem and it’s already working. The care we received, the doctor, the facility, everything exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend Village Veterinary Clinic to everyone who has a pet they love!

My dog was having a running nose and a cough and one morning I knew it was too bad for me to handle on my own. The vet told me he had pneumonia and wanted to keep him for 5 nights. He has never been boarded before so I was terrified. They called me twice a day with updates and even texted me pictures of my dog daily. I love village vet because they updated me along the way and took the absolute best care of my pup. They are trust worthy and extremely professional. I took my dog in today for a check up after the sickness. My dog was over the moon happy going back to see his village vet friends!!! Dr. Chip is the best person to take your dog to!!!!!

We are moving to another state, and we will miss taking our pets to Village Vet. We trust this practice with our (sometimes difficult!) pets. Dr. Chip has tended to three of our cats--one formerly feral cat with a terrible case of heartworms, one rescue cat with extreme hyperactivity, and one rescue cat with intense separation anxiety and periodontal disease. Our heartworm case passed away, sadly, due to her condition, but she lived several years longer than she should have--with a high quality of life--thanks to Dr. Chip's care. Because all of our cats are rescues and we have limited medical histories for them, we tend to take them to the vet as soon as a potential problem arises. Dr. Chip never dismissed our concerns, even when everything was fine, and he also helped us catch several issues before they developed into more severe illnesses. Because my spouse and I must travel frequently for work, we sometimes boarded our pets with Village Vet and were pleased with the attention they received while we were gone. The boarding facilities are clean and the cats are kept far away from the dog-boarding area, which helped to reduce our pets' stress levels during their stay. Additionally, the cost of medical examinations, boarding, and treatment at Village Vet is far less than we have paid in other cities. I recommend Village Vet to anyone looking for quality pet care in Auburn/Opelika.
