How to Save Money at Avalon Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff was great but the vet was a jerk. He pretty much tried to guilt me for rescuing 3 feral cats and give them a life. Then my rottie was on her death bed from cancer and they refused to see her because it was his surgery day. I was livid. Now we go to rock lake veterinary. Not the emergency hospital. They are amazing and caring.

I waited a long time to post this, but back in 2019, I lost my cat. I had to put him down due to fleas basically killing him, and the vet there was the biggest prick I've ever dealt with. I felt so rushed; the guy basically hurried me to put my cat down, and time was not something I felt I had to say goodbye. They took my cat into a room without me being there and just brought him outside to me in a brown bag. No heartfelt goodbyes, no soothing my cat, just this guy rushing me. I'll never get that time or justice back.

Had to put my Boxer down and I had her cremated. I ask the for the cost of all services combined and I was quoted a amount that seemed to be high (very). So do you want me pay now or when I pick up her ashes. They said NO! Pay here for it now. Four days had past and I called regarding her ashes. After trying to reach them for days ( always busy or put on eternal hold) they said I had to call Cook crematory if I had to know an exact date. I asked for their # and was hung up on. So I called Cooks I'm Nitro and a nice lady told me that would get her remains there Thursday am. Right before we hung up she asked did I have a credit card with Avalon to pay for it. I said no ma'am I paid Avalon like they insisted beforehand. She called me back and said it hasnt been paid for. I immediately called Avalon for 2 days (approx 150 calls) it was always busy or put on hold for 7-10 minutes and be hung up on. When I finally reached the office mgr ( a chimp or dog could run as one efficiently)she informed that the was vet bill only. I still dont know anything because I wanted to speak to the doctor but was refused. So $325 or $350, they put your beloved pet down. I don't know who is to blame but I have to put it in Avalon. That who got the money. Cooks Crematory in Nitro was nice and Avalon was & is a bad nightmare. Hell has a special people. I can only imagine how many and who. If your pet was loved please dont let them see hell before they go!

Saw our puppy before other vets could get us in. Appreciate that so much. Friendly staff. Met two different vet that work there and both were nice and seemed knowledgeable. No waiting, seen on time. Will return . A little disappointed that they were not in on Fridays. But there is an emergency number posted on the door.

The only place I take my fur babies! Even for boarding for a couple days. Everyone is so nice and takes care of my babies and Chris has so much patience with them! 🐕🐕💯
