How to Save Money at Olson Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I used to think Olson and his staff were great. I have taken my past 2 dogs to him. One was my English Bulldog "Charlie," who passed away at 5 due to heart issues that was never detected by him. My last dog, 3 1/2 year old St. Bernard, "Molly," I took her to him on June 12, 2025 for having a seizure. They didn't do an exam other than weigh her, prescribed her medicine for seizures..I told him she kept peeing on herself and I thought she may have a UTI. I also asked if they could do blood work. I was told just by him LOOKING at her that she didn't have a UTI and they didn't need to do blood work. I brought my dog home and started her on the medicine. She became very lethargic, I called back everyday to see if I could bring her in and have her checked for a UTI and get blood work because she was still having peeing issues and the medicine was making her to the point that I couldn't get her to stay awake. I was told that was normal. Before I got smart enough to take her to another vet, I called and asked can I bring her in, she was vomiting and not peeing normal and the medicine was making her to where she can't hold her head up, can I bring her in for labs to see if the dose is too high and get her checked for UTI? The vet tech, the older one there, told me she didn't need to be seen and he knew as much as Dr. Olson because he has worked there 30 years and to give her the medicine or she would convulse and die and she was too young for labs, she's only 3 1/2. I took her to another vet that day, they did a urine test, she had a severe UTI. They did labs and her creatinine,🎽bun, and red blood count was deathly out of range. My dog had a UTI that was severe enough to cause seizures. And I was told she was in AKI kidney failure. They asked why didn't her vet do a urinalysis and blood work? I told them I begged Olson's to do those tests. Within 10 days of seeing Olson, my dog went from being up and walking to needing a blood transfusion, 10 days of IV therapy and antibiotics. By this time her condition had not been properly treated so she was looking at a slim chance to live. I took her on to Ohio State Vet Hospital, where they kept her, did test, and tried to help her kidneys function. She passed away July 5, 2025 after $16,000 in vet bills of trying to save her and was told if they would have treated her with even oral antibiotics when I first had taken her in, that would have caught it early enough to have saved her. I have medical records, and documents to prove all of this. I have every right to sue this vet. But, it has taken me this long to even talk about it. I can't even stand to look at his office when I pass there. I'm in therapy for trauma and thinking I should have known better than to trust him, but that is where he should have been the professional and she was a patient. That guy ruined my life and took more from me than he'll ever imagine. My dog was my life. And I trusted him with her life and now she is dead. If you ever have to choose a vet for your animal, I suggest one that listens, actually does testing (labs) and cares.

I have been taking my dogs to Dr.Olsen for 2 years now. He is absolutely the best! My dog Toby loves the vet tech Rob and always acts like he is anxious to see him and Dr.Olsen. I honestly feel as though my other fur kid would have lived much longer if I hadn't been taking her to Dr. Ayers. It breaks my heart the difference in the treatment of the diabetes from Ayers Animal Hospital versus Olsens Animal Hospital. Abby was put through needle sticks DAILY. Her insulin was drastically changed per Dr.Ayers orders with each stick!Toby is being treated for diabetes, cushings disease, and is totally blind. And he is still doing well. After Toby went to get a tooth fixed and left in severe pain and scared to death AND did not see Dr.Ayers as promised, Toby was terrified to go back. And I can thank God that I found out about Dr. Olsen care. Toby actually loves him and Rob as well as Larry! They are the best!! Very kind as well. They definitely go that extra mile and show the live they have for their jobs and animals. They treat the patients just like they were their own! I'm very thankful and blessed to have Dr.Olsen take care of my fur babies!!

Best vet in the Huntington area hands down. Used Dr. Olson for 20+yrs now. Sends appt reminders for your pets, condolence cards when you lose a pet, and he’s just a really nice down to earth guy. Plus all his staff are just as helpful and supportive.

Dr. Olson and his staff are wonderful at caring for animals. Very compassionate and reasonably priced. My animals are always cared for in the best way.

They would not send a bill, or allow me to put a card on file for automatic payment. Even though I could provide proof of income. This is supposed to be for emergency situations. My pet died! They did offer several resources to apply for help paying for vet services. Although none of those worked out.
