How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Clean and organized. The front desk manager Alicia was very welcoming and friendly, and our dog was seen by Vet Tech Alexa and Dr. Collins, both who were wonderful! Dr. Collins explained the process and provided great education and explanations. He's very friendly and has great bedside manner. Although our dog was nervous and anxious, Dr. Collins did a great job letting her feel comfortable prior to the exam and vaccinations. Thank you team!

I had an incredibly time at the Petco in Interbay. I was incredibly distressed prior to the appointment, unsure if they would be able to meet my needs and price range, and they went above and beyond to give me access to everything my cat needs at an affordable price. They also had incredibly patient and kind staff that allowed us to feel at home and cared for. We will 100% be back and joining their rewards program! Their deals were insane as well as they had an elaborate display of animals to introduce to my cat to - we had so much fun!!

I brought my kitten here in December with an ear issue. A very overwhelming lady approached me as I walked in the door, starting a conversation about finances out of nowhere, before I was even checked in. Most of the appointment was spent glamorizing the veterinarian who (apparently) used to work at a well know animal establishment/zoo in the area, and determining determining which package of services that I was going to purchase for my kitten that day. I felt very pressured to spend money, a lot of pressure all throughout the appointment. At one point, I told the assistant “This is a very overwhelming appointment”. All the packages are expensive and included things that might not be necessary for each pet or appointment. As for the main concern about her ear, the vet did not even look inside her ear with any kind of instrument or tool. He looked from the outside and said “it should be OK”. Odd and unprofessional all the way through the exam. Now that we are established at another vet clinic, unfortunately, it’s a very serious ear issue for my kitten that requires surgery. I do not recommend this veterinarian simply because they were more concerned about amplifying the reputation of the vet on staff and about the finances regarding which package to purchase before addressing the concern (or anything other questions, which I had some) I had about my kitten’s ear. Terrible experience, especially having the information I have now about my kitten’s ear. I am a pet lady my whole life, I’ve had cats since I was a child myself. This is not my first cat, not my first pet. I also have a dog and a fish tank that’s full of fish and shrimp. The only reason I tried this veterinarian is because they are close to my house and I shop at Petco occasionally. Last thing, they do not have a fully operational surgical staff on board, so services would have been referred out either way.

Staff and Vet were extremely friendly and professional. Dr. Collins was knowledgeable, and put me at ease with my concerns. My dog was instantly very friendly with staff and Dr. Collins - a good sign.

Great vet. He was very patient and had s great understanding of dog behaviors. Our pet was so comfortable after a few minutes with the vet that she was leaning on him and getting lots of pets and affection. Knowledge and attentiveness to our sweet dog was greatly appreciated by us and our lovely pet!
