How to Save Money at Animal Emergency Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We had to take our cat Benny in a few nights ago because he was straining to pee, and staff there were very empathetic, helpful and up-front about the costs and what to expect. The worst-case scenario called for a pretty pricey procedure but the emergency vet, Dr. Drummond, did her best to make sure it was a last-resort option, and he ended up not having to get it. We were able to take him home under observation, and everyone there has been SO kind and patient with our many phone calls over the past 48 hrs checking to see if this behavior or that was normal. We are etetnally grateful for how they've cared for our sweet Benny boy!

Be aware there are 2 companies that share this building. AEC and Boundary Bay. Boundary Bay is Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, AEC is after 5 and weekends. AEC has at least 3 vets on and they treat me and my dog very well, provide great care for a reasonable price, not much different than a regular vet to be honest, and they respect my time. Also they are honest. I like them because I work nights, 6pm to 6am, and can bring in my dog on my regular hours. Dr. Johnson is a great vet & cares about my dog, tells me everything I need to know & does not pressure me. My first, and only, experience today with Boundary Bay I've found they are the complete opposite. Dishonest, rude, uncaring about me or my dog. They have only 1 vet, who likely won't even get to your pet. I have sat here for 6 hours waiting only to be told I have to wait for AEC to come in - another hour at least. And they are obnoxiously rude and snarky about it. My sick dog has been in a kennel for 6 hours and hasn't even seen a vet yet. And they made me pay in advance. All they care about is getting my money. I wish I had known about the 2 companies before coming in today. I will continue to use AEC and recommend them highly. I recommend avoiding Boundary Bay at all costs, they are terrible.

Our 18 years old Golden Aussie was failing. We went to AEC for euthenasia service. We called in advance and they were waiting for us. We were led to a private room. The technician asked for pertinent information and made us comfortable. They sedated her then placed an IV. We said our goodbyes and then she was gone. Everyone at the clinic was professional, comforting and compassionate. Thanks to all at AEC for the service provided.

Worst vet experience I have ever had. If you love your pet do not go here. They will over charge and she not set up for safe effective and efficient surgery. Doesn’t even have an endoscope. Called for an emergency visit didn’t want to come in to help. Said she didn’t have the right tools to remove a foxtail out of my dogs nose. She then said it would cost over 950.00 look at it. Mind you not remove it look at it. Plus a $ 65 phone call. Take your anima to Friday Harbor. They are both large animal vets. Educated have experience and are empathetic to your pets needs . Don’t use this Eastsound vet!

The girls here were fantastic. Quick and efficient. My dog and I were cared for quickly for an ER. They kept me updated every step of the way and took good care of my pet. Our Dr, Lynn was fabulous! Super informative and patient and allowed me options in my dogs care. I hope I never have to go to an animal ER ever again, however if I did I would go to AEC! My pup is on the mend :) thank you AEC!
