How to Save Money at Karen L. Ave, DVM, PT

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've heard about how awesome Dr. Ave is for years from the DFW agility community. Today I got to experience it first hand. I'm so very pleased with my initial visit regarding intermittent lameness issues with my young performance dog. Love her integrative approach to veterinary care. I'll be implementing her suggestions immediately for giving my dog the best shot at staying healthy for a long career.

My dog could not walk when she went to Dr. Ave the first time. She left walking (like a drunk John Wayne), but she was walking! Dr. Ave is amazing! She gave my dog an Xtra 5 or 6 years of pain-free life. Punk (the dog) loved da acupuncture lady!

This is an amazing veterinary practice and we were so fortunate that we we were referred for our 7 month old Golden Retriever. Dr. Ave is outstanding and so knowledgeable! Thank you for taking great care of Ginger and for all the great information about her health and care!

Amazing & fabulous. I have been a patron of Dr Ave for several years, and for multiple pets. She and her staff are stellar. Dr Ave has helped in both crisis & palliative matters for my dogs. Her approach to treatment is realistic, and effective. She has helped guide me through treatment options and has never recommended futile care options. She and her staff truly care about the animals, and it shows in the total "package" of care that they provide. Don't wait until your pets are in their last days & you are desperately seeking a miracle cure at the last minute. Bring your pets in now and get them tuned up and on a good maintenance schedule, and hopefully prevent or defray health issues before they become chronic, debilitating disease states. That way your pet can enjoy a boost in health status and you can enjoy them without regrets of exploring all options sooner. I have an ancient little Shih Tzu who, over 2 years ago, was diagnosed with lymphoma. Her vet told me she had maybe 2 months, 4 at the most. Dr Ave put her on a lymphoma protocol (3 traditional Chinese medicine formulations); it is very inexpensive, easy to give. I have been bringing her in for the acupuncture/B12 trigger points/manipulations on a regular basis, and, 2 years later... still plugging along. Dr Ave's care is also very pet-owner effective... we as pet guardians carry so much of the burden (aka stress) of our pets' health, and I quickly came to realize that she was also providing *me* with a lot of care, not just my dogs. I moved very far away recently for 6 months, and she even helped long-distance - talking me down from the ceiling, helping me focus on a sound plan for getting my little Shifu a viable treatment plan in my new location. We're back now, and the first thing I did was get an appointment for my dog. My little dog isn't going to be around much longer, but her time with Dr Ave & staff has helped her be comfortable & has maintained a good quality of life. This has been true of all my dogs that she has treated. Once this current palliative case has passed away, I will continue to bring in my other dogs regularly. They have health issues, and their treatment with Dr Ave has always helped ameliorate their overall health status. Plan ahead. She books up quickly.

DR. AVE is nothing short of amazing!!! She kept our beloved lab Bridget walking years after Bridget's traditional vet diagnosed her with degenerative myelopathy at age 12. When that vet diagnosed another of his patients with the same disease, he called and asked us for Dr. Ave's information so he could recommend her services as an adjunct to his own. Likewise, Dr. Ave is treating our beloved Phoebe, age 12, who was diagnosed with myxosarcoma and who wasn't a candidate for surgery. It is 7 months later, and Phoebe is still going strong thanks to acupuncture, chiropractic and Chinese herbal treatments. THANK YOU, DR. AVE!!!
