How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff got my Jackson (9 year old Shih Tzu) an appointment right away. They showed concern and compassion for his health.

Terrible business practices. They schedule appointments without informing you. A dental cleaning was scheduled by the front desk on apparently the day the optimum wellness plan expired. I was told since we are not renewing the plan for the next year that my dog could not get the dental cleaning we ALREADY PAID for. I either need a refund or for the dental cleaning to be completed. Imagine if a human physician scheduled a surgery incorrectly and charged for a surgery and then said the time period for the surgery expired. This is fradulent. No wonder there are lawsuits regarding the optimum wellness plan. We will be taking our business elsewhere.

They are great my pit (King) is so nervous of new people and they worked with him at his Pace and was so great with him. I really appreciate them and look forward to our next apt

In spite of Banfield’s claims, they are an apprentice program for vet graduates. I was under impression there was a professional level of competency available, but turns out that’s just not true. When our dog got sick, Banfield charged us extra for the exam and said we’d have to go to specialists for a diagnosis. Instead, we took our sick pup to the vet we use for our horses and she knew immediately that our pet suffered from laryngeal paralysis. She confirmed the diagnosis with a scope. Do not believe Banfield by paying them monthly to provide vet services they are not equipped to deliver and you’ll get no refund for their absorbent charges or incompetence.

I rescued a German shepherd puppy that didn’t have the best start in life. The day I got him, my son and I, went into Petsmart for food and other essentials. I purchased a $20 coupon book that included a free vet visit to Banfield pet hospital. Their office is located inside a few petsmart locations. I made an appointment and took him to the petsmart at Turkey Creek. We saw Dr Quiett. Her and a vet tech came into the room. I explained his beginnings and how I got him. She asked if they’d be his regular vet and Immediately tries to sell me a wellness plan. The vet didn’t know the details so she asked the vet tech to explain. The vet never checked my dog! Over the years I’ve had puppies and the vet always checked their testicles to ensure they were descending, looked for a hernia from the umbilical cord, looked inside their ears and mouth, checked their joint flexibility, and listened to their heart. She did nothing!!! All they wanted to do was push the wellness plan. I feel that coupon is a scam to get you in there and then sell you the wellness plan. What if something is or was wrong with him? A heart condition or other problem not visible to the human eye? I want to say the techs and front desk staff were amazing and you could tell how much they truly loved the animals. The vet just seemed checked out and very disengaged. We didn’t receive an exam, at all.
