How to Save Money at Carolina Veterinary Specialists Rock Hill

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog passed on the way to this clinic. All we needed was confirmation and after care. The lack of urgency, empathy and humanity at this place is concerning. We interacted with the receptionist and a vet tech. They took our dog to the back and confirmed she was deceased. A little while later the VT came back in with paperwork and says she was supposed to have left an hour ago. Im crying and zoned out so we ignore her. I ask to see my dog again and she said she needed to confirm with the owner before bring back out for our final goodbye (it’s truly my aunts dog but she’s retired and travels a lot so we typically keep her dog for her). I work a corporate job and fully understand policies and procedures but this treatment was uncalled for. We have two of our OWN dogs and we will never be back. I will say another VT (I think) came in and just her presence, demeanor and heart felt condolences made such a big difference. All it took was a few warm words.

My babygirl was very sick and CVS was recommended by our veterinarian friend. Once we had tests run, she was quickly diagnosed with pancreatitis. They kept her overnight and gave her the professional care she needed. The win for me is that she was attended to by a doctor and a technician all night long, not being left alone in a 7-5 office. Thank you CVS for being so loving and attentive to my dog and so caring towards me and my husband. Y’all are the best!!

Our poor little pup Skya looked like maybe she had been poisoned or had gotten into something in the yard. It was 9 PM on a Friday night and we noticed she was drooling and just kind of staring ahead not even laying her head down on her bed. It was really scary because she’s only six years old and is in otherwise perfect health. I was so grateful that Carolina Veterinary Specialists were open! I first called their Steele Creek location but they didn’t have a doctor available so they recommended I drive her to Rock Hill. They ran a full diagnostic and sent her home with some pain medicine. Seems like maybe she just hurt her back and the drooling was a reaction to pain, we’re still not sure but she’s fine today. It was only about 200 bucks - so not bad for emergency care and peace of mind.

We highly recommend Carolina Vet Specialists! We had an emergency with our Bulldog while traveling south through the area. The team of staff and doctors were amazing! They were equipped to handle the emergency and they were all knowledgeable, kind and very accommodating. Expert care continued through the night and into the morning. We had prepaid the amount they estimated would be needed for extended care and in the morning, when our pet was stabilized, and could leave, we were credited the amount of over payment. We recommend taking your pet to these sweet, caring people!

No one ever wants to have to go to the emergency vet, but I highly recommend this one. They quickly attended to all 3 of my dogs who we brought in for a toxic exposure. Staff and doc were awesome. Very kind and compassionate. Communicated well. Took great care of our four-legged children. We went there today because we had gone there a few years ago for another dog, and we also had a great experience then. Very thankful to have them nearby!
