How to Save Money at Southampton Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog was seen by a doctor on April 4. He sold me a heartworm medication ( 6 month supply) for which I paid $220. I checked the expiration date at home and it was expired. I went to the office the next day and the doctor said that according to manufacturer, this medication is still good for 6 months after the expiration date which is a lie. Please check the pills you are given at this Hospital before you give it to your dogs.

New Owner, absolutely awful, no compassion for the pet patient and only interested in adding items to the bill. Had a 9:00am appointment for our dog and the new “Doc” didn’t show up in the office until 9:30am. Our appointment was to check on to an hot spot our pet had on her leg and he ended up insisting on doing a full exam and wanted to do an ear cleaning which we do at home on a daily basis so we refused. If we allowed he would of tried to sell us every skin and shampoo they had in the office, but we didn’t fall for that also. So sad that Dr Meinhofer decided to sell his practice to this awful Vet Doc, but I guess he didn’t have a choice and is allowed to enjoy his retirement. I will only make appointments on Mondays or Tuesdays when Dr. Meinhofer is in the office. So sad that this new guy is going to tarnish the great practice that Dr Meinhofer once had🐶😞

I wish I could give negative stars! Didn't know there was a new owner. We've been going here for years! We went there to put our 15 yr old dog down, because he was having issues due to his age. This so called new vet was very insensitive to the situation and how he said he had to check to make sure I was not putting him down because I didn't want him anymore! I obviously was an emotional wreck and he was sooo WRONG!!!! Your words were very hurtful, especially due to the situation. I'm sorry to my dog.for taking him here.for your final hours on this earth! I will not be recommending this vet to anyone. It's time to find a new vet!

NEW OWNERSHIP! My family took our dog here growing up and I’ve been bringing my dog here for a couple of years now - absolutely no problem. Went last week for routine vaccine shots and a stool sample… new doctor scammed me into an ear infection diagnosis and medicine ($75 extra on the bill - $20 for a simple ear cleaning that wasn’t asked for and $55 for drops). My dog was showing no signs of an ear infection going into the appointment, but I followed doctors orders because I had no clue they changed ownership - I thought it was a new doctor helping. Next day we noticed the drops affected my pups hearing insanely bad to the point she can no longer hear us calling her. Took her to Richboro for a second opinion the very next day, both doctors saw no ear infection and told us to stop using the drops. Called Southampton to tell them and was told that all they can do is put this in the “doctors notes” and that the hearing loss is “not a common side effect” lol No apology, no remedy. Let me be clear, I’ve had absolutely no problems in the years leading up to this so I was stunned. Would recommend anywhere else but here.
