How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve been skeptical about Banfield as a company in the past, but this Banfield location completely wiped those concerns away. The technicians and reception staff are so kind, friendly, and helpful. Dr. Gondek is compassionate, thorough, and professional. We were uncertain about the nature of my cat’s illness, but he quickly was able to figure things out, prescribe her exactly the medication she needed, and clearly lay out the next steps for her treatment plan. 12/10 would recommend this place! P.S. My dad was my cat’s vet up until we moved out-of-state, so I’m very picky about and cognizant of who treats my babies, if that’s any further testament to how great these folks were.

I've had nothing but amazing experiences with the entire staff of Banfield Mechanicsburg specifically. I can’t speak to other locations. But I’m on a low budget and my cats are never forced any unnecessary testing, etc that breaks the bank. They are aware that when you say no thank you to let it go which a lot of vets now a days really don’t and it becomes very uncomfortable. My cat had dental surgery and they actually saved me some money by not having to take some teeth out and were able to cut some costs where appropriate for things they quoted me that didn’t turn out to be necessary which I was really pleased with. Overall when I call with questions I’m always given help not just at appointments and the staff ALWAYS returns calls if they say they will. I do wish the vet was more accessible for questions instead of questions being funneled through the vet tech on appts but really its not a big deal, it works, but if I had to critique that’d be the only change I’d make. I will keep coming back to Banfield, and drive further just to go to Mechanicsburg bc of the staff 🩷

This place has gone downhill after the pandemic. It used to be great but now from the employees and customer service are not good and in many occasions they seems lazy and dont really care. The way they operate is so bad. They made people wait outside the parking lot if u have early appointments before petsmart open at 9am which many people or members are not aware of and , made us wait on the phone for 10 minutes and tell us that we are late and need to reschedule. If thats the case you guys could just tell people they need to reschedule if they late in the FIRST PLACE instead of making them wait putting them on hold for 10-15 minutes outside the store just to tell them they need to reschedule. Mind you it was 85 F degree outside and We were 3 minutes late, 3 MINUTES! Appointment at 8:30 got to the store front at 8:33 where door is locked. Long story short i Decided to walk inside the store at 9am to cancel my pets plan and was told to call these number. Very bad experience will not come back anymore. I had my dog coming here since 3 months old next month he turn 7 years. Stay away guys its not the same. Update: they called me and apologize for the situation. I really appreciate what they did and decided to finish out my dog 1 year contract with them which gonna end in December.

They say they're open Sunday. I called and went online. No availability for this store. But Google says it's open. Ok. I pressed #2. If yall new patients, then no luck on weekends. Good to know before I tried booking. Smh
