How to Save Money at Brandywine Valley SPCA Animal Health Center | Malvern

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Nice people. Very helpful with the adoption procedure. I found my girl Foxy there and eas able to adopt her and take her home.

Everyone at this facility was very kind and compassionate. Luke went out of his way to assist me and was very patient, understanding and supportive. The staff exhausted all options to make sure my cat was given the absolute best care. I’m happy to say he’s doing much better I am so thankful for all of you!

The veterinarian & nurse/vet tech were both very friendly & kind. They listened to my concerns & answered any questions I had regarding my senior dog. Overall I was happy with the care received. The only improvement would be to have the front desk ladies smile & greet people coming through the door.

Extremely frustrating situation. I had not previously been to the vet clinic and utilized google maps for directions. The location is clearly marked on google as the door at the top of the ramp on the side of the building next to the huge sign. I parked in a labeled vet spot and took my dog in the pouring rain up to the door - it was dark inside and no one answered. Called the phone number and got a call center. They said they would transfer me to the office but the call bounced back to the call center. I explained I was concerned because it was now after my appointment time. The call center said they had noted I was there on time and not to worry, I would be seen. They said they would call the office again. Finally they came back and said that the office was closed and I should wait in my car for 30min for it to open. After 20 minutes I called again and a different call center person suggested I walk around the building (in the rain) and see if there was another door. At the other end of the parking lot, around the corner was the “main entrance” with no sign visible from the street. I dragged my dog in and was told I was late and my dog couldn’t be seen. I was so frustrated and none of the 4 ladies at the desk tried to help me solve the problem or showed any sympathy to me or my dog. If anyone had answered the desk phone at any point in the previous 30 minutes they could have just told me I was at the wrong door. I have never had such a horrible experience at a vet. I hope my picture will allow people to find the door. Update - only after my husband emailed every member of the board did we get any response, after trying to call for several days and leaving messages. Mike said the deposit refund would be sent as a check but has not been received, no I am not satisfied.

I have two cats that I had adopted through the SPCA shelter and they are all amazing there. My kitten that I had just adopted from there two weeks ago was having health problems so I took her after waiting for 40 minutes on hold to the health center because I was done sitting on hold after getting the speed busy noise before the 40 minute wait. Explained to them my issues that my 2 month old kitten was not eating or drinking water, which is very unusual for her because without a doubt my kitten would choose a bowl of water over me any day, she was shaking had blood coming out of one nostril and snot coming out of the other and they turned her down even though it was a medical emergency within two weeks of adopting her. To which their response was “No Sorry we cannot help you” and turned me away. On top of all this, my 2 year old cat hasn’t had a yearly check up since 2024 (more like hasn’t been seen by them since i adopted him in 2023) because I couldn’t get the health center on the phone and refused him his flea and tick since they haven’t seen him. When I would call they’d pick up and immediately hang up the phone, wouldn’t answer the thousand of voicemails I had left. It is truly disturbing that my cats cannot get vet care when needed and hang up the phone on people. I will never bring my two cats back here again. I’m very disappointed since the shelter is so great but the health center is terrible, unorganized, and not very friendly. Thank God for the shelter who took her almost immediately after hearing the same symptoms I had given to their vet hospital.
