How to Save Money at Dove Lewis Emergency Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Not a great place to take your critically ill bird. We have been here multiple times throughout our bird's life and for things like respiratory infections they are alright. They don't examine your pet with you in the room which I don't love and they don't seem super knowledgeable or equipped to do things like blood work or imaging. The reason for my poor rating is that when our bird was dying of cancer and our usual vet was after hours, I couldn't get someone to tell me if they had an bird vet on staff to see her. They said all their vets are capable of caring for birds, however there have been multiple times we have had a vet there tell us they weren't super sure or comfortable with bird care and referred us back to our primary vet. Which the reason we even came her on occasion was because she needed after hours care. So in summary we took our dying bird to Tanasbourne emergency vet after verifying they had an avian vet on staff and our parakeet got the humane care she needed. If we had brought her here she would have died alone in their back room instead of in our arms with pain and anxiety relief. I get that working in this industry is hard and that the public can be nasty to workers, but in those moments when you are just looking for simple questions to be answered, your front desk staff should be able to say if you have avian staff present or not. To save anyone potential heartbreak, just know if you take your bird here they will be taken back, not examined in front of you and possibly a vet without bird specific experience may handle their care. Other great options are: Tanasbourne Emergency Vet NW Exotic Pet Vet Avian Medical Center

We came in to Euthananize my beautiful lady Chloe and I was very wary of all of the bad reviews here online, but I just want to say they got us right into a room, were very compassionate, the whole process was quick and Chloe passed very comfortably in my arms, she felt no pain. They offered memorial items (paw prints and fur clippings) and took care of the entire bill with their financial assistance program. All I had to do was show I was on OHP and the entire visit was free.

Unfortunately I can't give a great review on Dove Lewis, have gone there for many years and in my experience it has grown to big and can't offer the same service they used to. My last visit on Aug 3rd was horrible, they used to offer discounts for low-income individuals and now they do not.. on top of that I was there for 8 and 1/2 hours trying to get my sick dog looked at, ended up leaving because they were so slow and busy, by that time they said it would be another 2 to 3 hours before he would be seen by the vet doctor. Had already paid $230 for them to only take his vitals and leave us waiting in the room for over an hour. Unfortunately I will never go there again because they charged just the same rate as any other vet that you can get into the same day much much quicker. It's too bad it used to be a good place to go now they've just become too big for their own britches.

I unfortunately had to go to Douglas last week with my precious kitty. Her name was Millie Bean. Everyone is assuming that she got hit by a car she is only three and I didn’t have much of an option. It was either amputate or put her to sleep the cat was so special to me. It has been one of the hardest things ever and I have. I’ve had to do this a lot. I always wondered about Deb Lewis, but it seemed like it was so far away and that you know it wouldn’t be that great. Well, let me tell you I would go back and go there every time if I could, they were the most caring, thoughtful, considerate people that I have ever dealt with when I’ve had to put an animal to sleep so I don’t wish that upon anybody, but if you have the opportunity to go there for any reason do it because they’re amazing they truly care about what they do. They truly care about the animals they take care of.

Dove Lewis has saved our doggie twice now in under a year. He only likes to get sick/hurt on the weekend apparently. Yes, it is expensive. Yes, we waited a very long time at both visits. But they gave our pup the care he needed when we had no other options and he is happy and healthy today because of them. We waited 4.5 hours to be seen by the doctor. We were in the waiting room for maybe an hour. In that hour we saw 3 different people yell at the front desk workers. I understand that some of these people are having the worst day of their life. But that doesn't justify screaming at workers who are there to help you. This community needs this vet hospital, and seeing how much abuse the workers got in just one hour was awful. No wonder they are short staffed. It seems like angry people are the main ones that take the time to write a review. So I wanted to come and say thank you to the staff at Dove Lewis, you did a great job taking care of our baby and it's okay that we had to wait.
