How to Save Money at Albany Animal Hospital, Inc. Ken Fletcher, DVM and Payton Hunt, DVM

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Everyone I interacted with the two times I went in were amazing! I had to put my baby down and they were the best. Dr.Jay was kind and calm during a tough for us and it helped. I ca not remember the assistants name :( but she was amazing. So sweet and thoughtful. I have a new vet in them with just how thoughtful and kind they all were during a tough time. I can’t wait for future (happier) visit with them. Thank you again!!!

I have been taking my animals to Albany Animal Hospital for many years and have loved the care and expertise from Dr. Fletcher. His practice has seen some different transitions over the years, and I’m very happy to say I am so impressed and happy with the services and care we’ve received from his new veterinary partners, Dr. Hunt and Dr. Jenkins! Dr. Hunt has been helping us care for our older cat who’s been battling thyroid issues and teeth/mouth pain. We found ourselves in a vicious cycle but Dr. Hunt has helped develop a comprehensive care plan to give time for thyroid levels to normalize while keeping pain/infection at bay- giving us a great opportunity for a very needed teeth cleaning and hopefully break to the cycle! I really appreciate Dr. Hunt’s warm and compassionate care, as well as, his ability to partner with owners on the care of their animal. We recently saw Dr. J with my dog and I am happy to say the visit was very productive and pleasurable! He took his time and was very thoughtful with his diagnosis, as well as, proactively considering other possibilities and other plans to pivot to as necessary. I really appreciated this approach! I felt comfortable asking questions and making my own guesses and he was very kind and informative when those guesses didn’t fit the puzzle without making me feel dumb or ignorant. The office’s front office staff is top notch!! They are all caring, kind, and engaged. They will do magic if they can to get you fit in and help as needed! Support assistants are techs are warm and very loving to each and every animal. They have been stellar in giving all my animals the consideration and attention they need! I can confidently say, I have no concerns that all animals are in good care at Albany Animal Hospital!!

We just got home from our first visit with Dr Ken Fletcher and his team at Albany Animal Hospital. Since moving here from Colorado we have been searching for our dog's forever vet....and we found it. These people love animals and it shows. Dr Ken took time to get to know us, where we live, what we do for fun, and get to know our fur baby. He did a thorough exam, treated her for a UTI, got her updated on her shots and gave us the most reasonable quote for dental surgery. Mason (the vet tech/dr's assistant) is amazing. Clipped our dog's nails in record time, he was knowledgeable and thorough. The entire staff here is welcoming! Jessica got us scheduled, requested our dog's previous records and checked us out like a true efficient, professional. Thank you to all of you for giving us a wonderful experience and making us feel right at home. If you are looking for the best care for your fur baby....look no further than Albany Animal Hospital!!!!

I have been bringing my pets to Dr Fletcher for 19 yrs. He listens to my concerns, explains things, and together we work out a treatment plan. I would highly recommend Albany Animal Hospital to everyone!

Our experiences here have been over the top! When our dog Mugzee (Jack Russel) had cancer and there was nothing else we could do, Dr. Sara was so attentive to him and us as we had to put him to sleep. She let us be alone together on the patio on a warm summer day and spend time with him after the procedure. As we went back to our car I saw her gently wrap him in his blanket and lovingly carry him inside the clinic. We now have Gage (Black Lab) and Dr. Sara is so patient with him. She noticed his anxiety at our last visit and spent extra time calming him before his shots. She also prescribed medication for the anxiety which has been a great help. We highly recommend this clinic to everyone!
