How to Save Money at Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

At 4 months old my puppy Rosie was/is super hyper and broke her femur. The urgent care vet put a cast on. I knew within 30 minutes that was not going to work. I drove 2 hours to Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center. Dr. Pfeffer did surgery on that day, friday evening so Rosie would not have to wait until Monday to be more comfortable. He did such a fantastic job with a less intrusive patch. At 3 weeks post surgery she healed enough to have the bar and pins removed. At 4 weeks she is back to zoomies and everything is healed.

Eastern Carolina Veterinary is absolutely outstanding! From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel welcome and cared for. The front desk team is friendly, organized, and always willing to answer questions, and the veterinarians go above and beyond to ensure every visit is thorough and stress-free. They treat pets with such genuine compassion, as if they were their own, and explain everything in a way that makes you feel confident in your pet’s care. The clinic is clean, professional, and efficient, and appointments always run smoothly. Whether it’s routine checkups, vaccinations, or unexpected visits, I know my pet is in the best hands here. I can’t recommend Eastern Carolina Veterinary enough—they are the gold standard for veterinary care!

The staff and doctors are amazing. They work with you quickly and efficiently. They actually answer the phone and spend time explaining things without feeling rushed. We had 2 visits over the weekend for my sick kitty. Zeke had an emergency surgery and he is home today doing really well in recovery. And He looks good in Pink too!

Eastern Carolina Vet.Hospital is a top notch healthcare service for your precious pets anytime day or night. They are responsive, kind, patient and very professional. We saw multiple staff during our puppies illness. The doctors always described her status, offered a plan of care and openly listened to our concerns and what were our expectations. The vet. techs. were very knowledgeable about procedures, could answer questions and explained charges. I always received a call back when I needed assurances that my little one was being snuggled and loved. The reception staff on Sunday when we were called at church to pick her up were overwhelmed with patients but kept their professionalism and composure. Our little one is doing well. We are very grateful to Drs. Richmond, Pfeffer, staff Eric, Taylor, and numerous staff who I can’t name. God has definitely blessed your profession and practice. Words can’t express how thankful we are that you were there when our family needed your expertise.

I called ahead to let them know I was coming. The receptionist that I spoke with was so kind and patient. Doing that made arrival really smooth. I was very emotional and having that conversation in the lobby with others around would’ve been difficult. The vet was also amazing. She handled our conversation with grace and compassion. While I hope we won’t need emergency services again, I’m thankful to know we have a good option available.
