How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had the best experience here, so 10/10 recommend. As soon as I walked in, the shift lead, Jamie was so helpful and friendly to me and my fur baby. She made the check in process so smooth and explained everything perfectly regarding the different plans. Definitely will be back to visit.

I have been using this Banfield location for years and have always been happy with the service. Their Wellness Plan is also a great option!

The kindness of the staff is on again off again...Whenever I call, it seems like an inconvenience that I'm calling. Sometimes I'm hung up on after holding for several minutes, and then when I call back they say that they didn't hang up. The care is good and the location is super convenient, I just wish the front desk staff would be a little friendlier. We've been with Banfield for almost 17 years, but if and when the time comes, I'll probably switch to something else.

Your pet is better off receiving care somewhere else. I dropped my cat off for a dental cleaning and comprehensive exam. After I brought her home, I realized her claws had been clipped without my request, consent, or approval. When I called Banfield and said that my cats nails had been clipped without my consent the response from the receptionist was "well we didn't charge you for it" in a rude manner. She then said "I dont see what the issue is." My response was, "I would like to know why this was done even though it wasn't requested." I got another rude response of "well idk I wasn't working yesterday when your cat had her appointment." Regardless of being charged or not, I left my cat in their care trusting that they would only do that which was necessary and approved. Instead of honoring my wishes, they subjected my cat to unnecessary treatment and discomfort. I got multiple calls from the vet the morning of the visit with updates on the progress of the cleaning. There was no mention of the claw clipping. Additionally, they neglected to put the claw clipping in her medical/visit summary. It's as though they intentionally tried to hide their actions. Anyone in need of vet services for their animal should avoid this place. Their priority is profits rather than customer service and quality pet care.

Find a different vets office/business or different Banfield location, not the one on Sharon Rd. Charlotte. The lack of care, guidance, and indifference by vets at this location led to the death of my 12 yr old senior in 3 weeks. I have since spoken to an ex employee from this location who said they’d never go back or bring a pet there. My girl died in December and I miss her dearly and it could have been avoided if the vets just cared. After reading other reviews here it looks like I’m not alone. I went to a Banfield in CT with 2 other dogs and the care was 5 star…for years! Then came to Charlotte and Banfield on Sharon Rd. Initially Dr. Burch was there and she was fantastic. Then the current full time vet came in and it was ok at first but as time went on the new vet just didn’t care. Who knows why. Contact me if you want details. Update: it’s been 4 months since I lost my little girl & it haunts me how indifferent the vets were at this location. They could have helped, they could have been caring, but they weren’t.
