How to Save Money at Murphy Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We’ve been with Dr Shannon Flegle, Jeff and the staff for 15 yrs and they make choosing them every time easy. Choosing veterinary care for your pets is just like choosing a primary care doctor. With every pet added to my family comes complexity; and that’s just an expectation with us – because I know with Dr Flegle, we will get through it. She always brings her best self in every medical care plan, surgical procedure, etc and is ready to save the next pet, one pet at a time. We’ve battled the most debilitating illnesses together, the longest and worst single-case surgical procedures with grit and she and the staff roll up their sleeves, hold your hand and feel everything we do. Dr Flegle has an extreme passion for animals & wellness. It’s evident in all that she has grown a single vet clinic into. While caring for our animals, she expands her knowledge, expands her certifications and encourages the staff to bring the best care forward to every patient and every client. What started as a tiny 1 room clinic and boarding has grown into so much more in a multi-facility property – hydrotherapy and rehabilitation services, laser therapy, shock wave therapy, massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, boarding, grooming training and more. You make a difference in our lives and the lives of all of your patients. We can’t thank you enough for all you do. Thank you for being here for my dogs, my family.

I've been driving an hour each way to work with the folks at Murphy Animal Hospital, and can say my dog definitely found the care she needed after a life threatening spinal injury that paralyzed all 4 legs. Phyllis has been a great communicator, and the care, knowledge, and compassion that Dr. Flegle and Dr. Jen are providing her during her PT is exactly what she needs. Less than 2 weeks after her injury, she's able to move under her own power and is well on her way to recovery. Very thankful I found this place and these people!

I came here for touch up laser and rehab for my working line Belgian. On her assessment, we learned she was ouchier than even I realized. The doctors and staff have been phenomenal. They answer all my questions with patience, care, and detail. They also are willing to take their time with my girl, prioritize low stress handling, and even let me introduce my other problem child dog to the facility so he’ll be more comfy when he does eventually go in for rehab. Cannot say enough about what a lovely place this is!

Dr. Shannon Flegle and her team addressed my dog Moose’s long term chronic pain needs utilizing their medical treatment and holistic rehabilitation services. After six weeks of being under the care of Dr. Flegle and receiving rehabilitation services Moose's mobility has greatly improved! He has built up his muscles and has significant muscle tone. Moose bears weight on his problematic left leg and his gait has improved.  As a result, he is more active and playful! He has the stamina to go for longer walks and is able to keep up with the other dogs.  Moose is at a healthier weight now. We were given the tools and education to address his ongoing weight and diet needs. Thank you Dr. Flegle, massage therapist Elisha and the entire team at Murphy Animal Hospital for all of the amazing work, care and compassion! You all have gone above and beyond expectations to ensure that Moose is  successful in his rehabilitation journey. Thank you!!!

I was going to avoid writing this, however after receiving my dog's records today, here I am. We adopted a dog in August 2024 who had been rescued and initially cared for by Murphy so we continued care thinking they're familiar. We have had several visits, many of which I left not appreciating the way staff has been toward me. Several people were not personable, snippy, and rude. Nonetheless, we continued because I wanted to make sure my dog got what she needed. Unfortunately, our last visit was the worst one. We saw Dr. Jenner for an exam and vaccines. She is rude and disrespectful and spent more time lecturing me about using chewy for our dogs prescription diet and meds instead of them. My dog is getting what she needs, I pay less on chewy (after she had a vet tech price out a med we were not low on even after I said I was not interested), and my pocketbook is just fine, thanks. My main concern was my dog being on Zenrelia and a black bx FDA warning stating dogs should not be vaccinated while on the medication. Dr Jenner breezed past this, told me to keep her off of it as long as she could tolerate while laughing??? However, she documented in her records she told me twice, and highly recommended me not giving to her for the FDA's recommended days, which she even mentioned. Maybe she was in a different appointment than me? The front desk person also said Dr Jenner said 2 weeks when I called to ask about the study, so happy to know Dr Jenner was falsely documenting information on my dog to cover herself. I also had a problem with the invoice having expired dates for 2 of the 4 vaccines and was told that was incorrect, provided me with different dates over the phone, and expecting me to trust them. So, apparently documenting is an issue for several at Murphy. I noticed they "left a voicemail" for me in June regarding me calling about my dog randomly peeing blood requiring a trip to VSS, however my call log and voicemail show 0 calls from them. Great at covering your butt notes though. Unfortunately, Dr Flegle is a good vet with great bedside manner, she just happens to hire and work with some rude colleagues (Dr Jenner mostly). Our dog will always be taken care of and have everything she needs, but now it will be happening FAR AWAY from Murphy Animal Hospital.
