How to Save Money at Skadron Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Tom Skadron is the absolute best veterinarian I've ever had. I feel like he cares about my dog's care just as much as I do. He takes his time with me pets and with me and makes sure I know what is going on and what my options are. They are the absolute best care people ever. The front office staff and tech staff are amazing too. I highly recommend them

Skadron Animal Hospital has the best team! I’ve worked with Dr. Teri for my guinea pigs and now I have a cat that loved meeting Dr. Keelia for our first appointment this week! I can definitely tell she’s a cat person and my cat loved getting pets and love. Thanks for all your hard work and love for animals!

My senior cat has been a patient at Skadron Animal Hospital for years. They never, ever fail us. I honestly don’t have a single complaint. They take such good care of my little bub. I’m so grateful. Their staff is compassionate, smart and the care they provide is thoughtful and comprehensive. I’m never left in the dark; they allow me (and encourage me!) to be an active participant in my pet’s care. And you can tell that they work really hard, from the front desk to the techs to the vets. That’s why I don’t always see a specific veterinarian — they’re all excellent. Also, vet services can get expensive quickly, no matter where you go, but Skadron’s pricing never makes me feel like I’m being taken advantage of. It’s always worth it. Our pets are our family, right? And Skadron treats them like theirs, too. I hope they stay around for a long time.

This is a great place. They know what they're doing and I trust them. We recently had to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to our dog of 8 years, and they were kind, compassionate, professional, and comforting. It really made a devastating experience much more bearable. We always see Dr. Heidi. She has some kind of magical power with Animals I swear.

I brought my puppy here last week for his first vet visit. I live a good 25 minute drive away and came on a referral from a friend. The whole drive there I was kicking myself for not picking one of the many vets close to my house. When I arrived I was greeted by friendly staff and took a seat in the waiting room next to sleepy kitties and bookshelves of pet-related books. When the vet (Dr. Abigail Clement) came into the exam room she sat right down on the floor to greet my dog. She spent the whole visit on the floor, petting my dog and gaining his trust, all while asking me questions and checking his ears, teeth, etc. When it was time for vaccines the vet tech came in and held my dog and I was tasked with feeding my dog peanut butter and cheese on a wooden stick, my dog didn't feel a thing. Skadron called the next day to check up on my pup and see how he was feeling. I am so impressed by all of the staff's true love for animals and professional care. I realized from the moment the vet greeted my dog on the floor of the exam room that the drive to Skadron over the years will be well-worth it for this incredible, compassionate care.
