How to Save Money at Orion oaks animal hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Milam and her staff are by far the most down to earth, knowledgeable, and hardworking people! This clinic will make your pet feel right at home. It’s ALWAYS super clean as well. Amazing prices for high quality care! My fiance and I recommend all of our friends and family here. The care that Dr. milam provides for our rescue babies has always been phenomenal. The newer vet Dr. C is an absolute sweetheart and is super wonderful as well! I previously worked for a rescue so I was at this clinic multiple times a week for years. These people truly care about the fur babies and their clients! ♥️

In November 2024, our fur child, Kingsley (a German Shepherd), managed to stick his head into a thorn bush and came out with deep scratches inside his big ears. We initially called our primary vet, but they couldn’t get us in, and the bleeding just wouldn’t stop. That’s when we called Orion Oaks Animal Hospital, and I’m so glad we did. They got us in right away. The front desk staff was incredibly kind and welcoming, treating Kingsley as though he was their only patient. They saw the bleeding and had a room ready for us within minutes of walking in. Kingsley was taken back for an exam quickly, and while I could tell there was some nervousness when I couldn’t immediately provide his updated rabies information (even though I knew it was current and Kingsley would never bite), they acted with urgency and care, taking him back because of how immediate the situation was. When they brought him back, I had found the rabies records, and they couldn’t stop praising Kingsley for being so sweet and well-behaved. He let them touch his ears without flinching or pulling away—a true testament to their gentle care and his temperament. The vet gave me two options: Wrap the ears, place him in a cone for a week, and administer antibiotics to prevent infection—hoping it would heal on its own (though cauterization might still be needed later). Cauterize immediately, which would require sedation but would resolve the issue quickly. The vet explained both options thoroughly, noting that wrapping was the safer, cheaper, and less aggressive choice, though it came with a small risk of Kingsley getting out of it and needing cauterization later. Knowing Kingsley’s temperament, I decided to try the wrap and cone. In about 10 minutes, they had him all wrapped up. Kingsley bumped into everything with the cone, but the front desk staff showered him with love and treats on his way out. They even mentioned that if I wanted to return to my regular vet for follow-ups, I absolutely could—something I appreciated for its honesty. A few days later, the clinic called to check on him. Within the week, Kingsley managed to work his way out of the wrap, but by then, the scratches had scabbed over, and he didn’t seem bothered at all. Exceptional customer service, thoughtful decision-making by the vet, and overall a fantastic experience. Not to mention it was under $200. I was anticipating a much steeper cost. We’re even considering switching to Orion Oaks Animal Hospital permanently, despite the longer drive, because of how well they cared for Kingsley (and us).

We have been taking our cat and dog to Orion Oaks for a few years now and I just felt compelled to leave a review after our experience the last few months. Dr. Chande is so kind and compassionate and we could not have asked for a better doctor to care for our fur babies. All of the techs and the ladies at the front desk have been amazing as well. So thankful for all of them!

We have 2 dogs with special needs and started to bring them to Orion oaks from a recommendation. We absolutely love it. They really care about the animals and treat them like family members!

Extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and caring staff! Appointments are always timely. I foster dogs with CCRC, so I've made quite a few visits here. We recently foster-failed and the visit for our new pup was just as pleasant as with our previous fosters. 🐶❤️🐕
