How to Save Money at Veterinary Health Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've had 2 experiences here and both weren't great. Today's was the last time I'll ever be there. The vet was so unprofessional and rude. She got snippy when I asked questions for clarification. I told her we were leaving because if she treats me and my dog that way I would hate to see how they're treated when we're not there. Before even really looking at my dogs wound she immediately gave me an estimate saying she needed surgery, for 1500$ I called our regular vet (animal alley) from their parking lot telling them what just happened, and they said to bring her right over. They examined her at animal alley, cleaned the wound. Saw that it was already healing, gave us antibiotics and sent us on our way. I will never recommend this vet to anyone. Ever.

We have brought our dogs to Vet Health Center for the past 5 years - from senior dogs to puppies. The staff is very welcoming, and they really do their best to care for all our dogs. We recently had to put our senior dog down and they took their care to an even higher level.

Thank goodness I found thee best veterinary office around!! Unfortunately I’ve had less than acceptable experience with vet offices in the past. We cannot say enough positive things about Veterinary Health Center! From the moment we walked in, our cat Ernie was completely at ease and so was I. The atmosphere of the office is more than welcoming, and the staff is very friendly and wonderful. The Doc was caring, informative, sweet and patient. I immediately made my second cat’s appointment here, because as long as we are in the area, this is going to be our permanent home for our pet’s veterinary care. So, so, so happy & delighted with finding this amazing office!! They also have some great hand-crafted cat toys, that I treated my guy to after being such a good boy for the Doc and Tech. He’s been “bunny-kickin’-crazy with it!

The veterinary care it good, and the staff have always been nice and kind to both my dogs who received treatment here for 10+ years. When it came time to change to another veterinary clinic due to closer location, it became impossible to get my dog's records transferred to his new clinic. I've been trying to get his medical record emailed for TWO WEEKS. I've spoken with three different people, and the new clinic even called requesting records be emailed to them. The second and third person I spoke with, I even gave the date of his appointment. The day of his appointment comes, and there are NO RECORDS. My dog has an allergic reaction to his annual vaccines....that is the stuff they need to know. I would think you would have valued my dog enough to do what I asked three times or at least tell me no instead of wasting my time making useless phone calls. I'm very disappointed.

3/18/24 took my cat in because he was sick and had to put him down. Dr. Tina and the nurses were great! Was a sad enough day and turned to anger and frustration when the office accountant came in the room, sat down and said "So Shawn what are we going to do about this? You agreed to do this why don't you have the money?" Sorry, I didn't have $500 in my pocket and had to go get the rest of the money. Unfortunately She didn't believe I would return with payment and was harassed more. My furbaby is suffering and all I want is him at peace and you want to make sure you're paid before that happens! I'll never forget those words
