How to Save Money at Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We live in KY. While camping in ME our sweet Ivy, a golden doodle, got into burrs in the woods. The staff at PVESC took great care of her. With their care and the right meds we were able to continue our vacation. Ten days later, we are home, Ivy is doing fantastic. We are so grateful for their care. Thank you for what you do.

We had to take our beloved Savannah girl to have a knee replacement done on the left leg and Dr. Sullivan was excellent and so is the whole staff unfortunately eight weeks later she had to have the second one done and they were terrific again. Savannah is going back swimming in the ocean and in the harbor. She’s a happy girl again..

Respectful and professional. If you’re not concerned about price, or this is your only option, prepare to have confidence in this team of caring, competent vets, techs, and support staff. I am tired of agenda-driven, arrogant vets and this office was sweet relief. This was the only office in Maine that I found would do an ovary-sparing spay. The research supports the importance of the full endocrine system for a long, healthy life, and that includes the ovaries and testicles. While other vets may get overly-assertive in pressing you to do a traditional spay or neuter, I was so pleased to speak with Dr. Agrondia about the benefits of keeping the ovaries, and discussing issues that may arise down the road, which may also occur in intact females. Do your own research! I highly recommend this practice, and this veterinarian practice as well. Oscar, our 1 year old GSD, was born with a paw that was missing some toes. The breeder’s vet in Ellsworth told me that German Shepherds are drama queens and that he was faking the limp, and if I got him fixed, it would solve his limp and barking. Outrageous! The next day, I made an appointment with the caring people of Portland Veterinary Emergency and Speciality Care. Dr. Giannetto loves German Shepherds and her approach to Oscar’s dilemma was spot-on: X-rays for clues; observations for dynamics; and photos/videos from his puppyhood for data. We had scripts for pain management and scheduled surgery right away. Life is never simple, so it was several months later before his surgery, which went very well. After a few weeks of recovery, his orthotic arrived and we had an appointment to remove sutures and fit the orthotic. We live 3 hours away from Portland, and everyone was as accommodating as possible. Oscar is now getting used to the orthotic and seems very happy whenever he has it on. Drama queen indeed!

I can’t say enough about how kind everyone was here. My cat was diagnosed with cancer and it was her time. The staff here were so caring guiding me through the process and giving me all the time I needed with my sweet girl. They were compassionate and gentle with her. A very busy center but worth the wait for the thorough and kind care.

From the support staff to the vets themselves these amazing people are kind, compassionate, and so hard working. After Mainely dentistry tore my cat’s trachea they saved her life. They did everything possible to maximize her chances of recovery and I’m forever grateful for that, they are truly amazing. Even the updates are so caring and thoughtful, and I greatly appreciated each and every second they took to assume me my baby was safe. My girl also sees doctor Gregory on the specialty side, who I also couldn’t be more happy with. He takes the time to explain every detail and address any concerns you may have. This is the gold standard for veterinary care and I couldn’t be more grateful for everything they’ve done for my baby.
