How to Save Money at Portland PetMedic Urgent Care Vet Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

So, we unfortunately, had to make a trip to Urgent care in Portland last night with one of my dogs. No one wants to have to make a trip like this, but it is so nice to have the option and not necessarily go to an emergency room if it can be avoided. From start to finish, it was a wonderful experience. I made the phone call, and I could immediately tell that the woman on the phone was kind and sympathetic to what was happening, and she got my dog, Bella, and I an appointment right away. When we showed up, we called and they had us come in, early even and brought us right to our own room. My dog is super sweet, but timid around new places and new people. She immediately warmed up to the vet tech that came in (though she did bark at something through the door that gave the tech a little burst of adrenaline!). The doctor came in shortly later. Everyone explained everything really well and they took care of her right there and then. They explained the fee breakdown very clearly before proceeding with treatment also. I can't imagine what a tough job it is to work at PetMedic and what the doctors and their assistants see everyday: They see people and animals at their worst, but they had smiles on their faces. They were empathetic, and understood, each case was different. I hope to never need them again, but it is comforting to know they are there and if needed, I wouldn't hesitate to go again.

I highly recommend for any emergency!!! The staff were kind and quick to help and called me back immediately. It was easy to make an appointment online and I was so grateful for their genuine concern for my beloved fur baby! The facility was extremely clean and well maintained. I was so impressed and for being in a very stressful situation, they made it so much better. I hope I don’t have another emergency but I would be on my way here in a heartbeat! The vet, Dr. Kim was so kind and compassionate. She explained everything well and I felt like my cat, Juno was in great care with the team. So grateful they were recommended to me by my local vet!!

I am so incredibly grateful for PetMedic! I had called my primary veterinarian multiple days in a row and sent pictures of my pups incredibly inflamed ear and raw skin and yet they only told me to try Zyrtec(which he had been on for months) or make an appointment three weeks out. My poor pup was in so much pain and extremely uncomfortable to the point where he would cry whenever we would touch his ear. I finally decided to take him to urgent care where they got me in same day and came up with a care plan for him. I am quite the anxious dog mom but they really eased that anxiety. Moose and I are so thankful❤️

The staff were all so friendly n most important my Cat was comfortable on seeing them as well. From yesterday to today what a difference. She ate 1/2 jar of Chicken & Rice Baby Food n drank lots of ice water her favorite ☺

It's a relief to know that they're open when we need them. In our town our local vet is only open Monday through Friday until 6 pm. We've been there for our two dogs on separate occasions for mild emergencies that range from UTI's to "hot spots." They are always so nice and they even email you to follow up how your furry loved one is doing. It's one of those things, hope to never go back, (because going back means that one of the pups isn't feeling well), but if we have to then we'd definitely come back without hesitation.
