How to Save Money at Veterinary Urgent Care Center - Dedham

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My puppy gets Frontline but a tick found a host on my cat, Ellie. It latched on over her eye in the dark shadowy area and was very engorged when I saw it Friday. Come Saturday, it looked even worse as it turned into an infected wound. Ellie wouldn’t be seen until Monday at our vet and I was concerned about waiting another 2 days. My mom reminded me about the Urgent Care in Dedham and I booked a 1pm appt online after seeing it was an hour wait for walk in. The booking process was simple and straightforward and confirmed a cost for the office visit. We were taken right away, met with the tech first, Ellie had the area cleaned, tick remnants removed and the infection treated. The dr took Ellie’s medical condition into consideration when recommending she get an antibiotic injection rather than a topical. She’d be req’d to have a cone and with her stress induced urinary disorder, that option wouldn’t be good for her. The staff were caring, non alarmists, kind and of course, knowledgeable. If you’re between vets, new to the area or can’t get an appointment at your vet, I recommend using Veterinary Urgent Care Center. The cost is very, very reasonable. This is Ellie in the waiting room. Her tears go into overdrive from stress during car rides and her carrier, so she looks rough (still adorable). The wound now looks so much better, am glad I took her in when I did.

Been here at least 5 times. Every time staff is exceptionally professional, knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. Operations are incredibly efficient. My dog is always well cared for. Follow up/trough with aftercare always exceeds expectations. This clinic/practice is a gem - absolutely recommend

I was given an extremely prompt appointment (within 45 minutes of my call) for Milkshakes, a dog with a painful eye problem. The staff was caring, pleasant, efficient and empathetic. The vet, Dr. Elena Cox, was, in a word, excellent. She explained every procedure with an emphasis on why it would be beneficial and offered options before each of her suggestions. Very thorough exam. She patiently and clearly answered all my questions. Dr. Cox exuded knowledge and competence. She promptly prepared a written summary of the dog’s symptoms, her examination, test results and suggestions for further treatment by the dog’s primary care veterinarian. Twenty-four hours later the dog’s eyes are looking very much improved and she appears very comfortable.

I couldn’t get a same day appointment at our new regular vet , and I didn’t want my dog to be uncomfortable for another day. That’s why I was so happy to get right in at this practice. Everyone was kind and gentle with my dear Bruster. They tested his ear gunk and found he did have something going on. They prescribed an ointment and an ear cleaning solution. The vet offered suggestions to help reduce the risk in the future. Parking was easy and they were a very handicap accessible space. I really appreciate the care they showed to my dog and to me.

Excellent customer service from the moment that I walked in for my pup’s appointment to the end. The anesthesia tech (worked the front desk on the day I went in), nurse, and the veterinarian were very professional, friendly, and thoroughly answered questions that I had. The doctor carefully examined my very anxious little girl and was so gentle with her. I will definitely be returning in the future.
