How to Save Money at Clay Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have never had any problems or issues whatsoever in several years now with two of the most amazing doctors: Melissa & Nicholas Luke! Let me say as the owner of 35 years for El&JM rescues and Sanctuary out of California - I’m very concerned and picky about our sanctuary and wildlife as well as our. Domestic animals being in the hands of any care of others especially after having problems in the past with a few horrible veterinary services from other places throughout the United States. No place is perfect! I have had issues before with the receptionist being a bit rude, but that has no bearing whatsoever on the care that the doctors give her. I was asked today from a client about my experience with this place and all I could say to him was: You’re in good hands with the two most respected doctors from us on the medical professional side - who I have ever had the opportunity to hire as our veterinarian relationship for the animals we care for. We have several wildlife veterinarians offices and exotic veterinarian services we work with, but mostly out of state, but if it was an emergency situation here in Kansas, I definitely would take them here to see either one of the licensed doctors. The two doctors will truly try to help you, From : EMERGENCY AFTER HOURS SERVICES EXTREMELY DIFFICULT SURGERY TO SAVE YOUR ANIMAL. TO EDUCATE THEMSELVES ON NEW SITUATIONS AND TO HELP IDENTIFY NEW TREATMENTS. We have taken several domesticated animals here and we had one emergency with an exotic that we did. This place is lucky enough to have two amazing people and I’m lucky enough to support them in their work as doctors that I truly believe are here for the animals and nothing more. Thank you Doctors Melissa and Nicholas Luke. We need more doctors like you both in our veterinary care communities for Kansas. And if anyone is interested in adoption - We have several domesticated and feral cats that are in need of homes that have special needs from all ages - No adoption fees, but we do require a clean background check before any adoption is allowed and a verification process of the veterinary care facility that will be working with you and the new rescue pet. I hope my review helps others out in the future. Thanks for the read. And here are just a handful of pictures of animals both doctors have helped … many many more also from Ducks and other animals here. Thank you all!!! I would like to update my post, yesterday 03/21/25 I called because I saw an unexpected pull from my bank account, I called to asked that they please don’t pull yet as I am waiting for IRS payments to pull out first as I’m dealing with IRS and tax problems. The receptionist I was speaking with wouldn’t let me speak at all and was yelling at me to stop yelling even though I was never yelling and I started laughing and said - your the one yelling miss. Omg she got so mad and said fine I’ll have the doctor call you, I was like WHY? I’m not needing to speak to the doctor I’m just asking for you guys not to pull and she was yelling even more! It was very rude and unnecessary as well as unprofessional. Sadly I have had problems with this lady before on the phone and I’m not sure if she is just random on mood swings or if it’s she just hates me. After this conversation I don’t think I want to continue working with this veterinary clinic until she is no longer there. It’s sad because the veterinary doctors here are the very best people who are so very educated and caring but with this other issues I don’t want to ever call back in regards to any of my animals. I don’t have anything bad to say about the doctors and I highly recommend them but I do think they need to release the receptionist for her employment and get one of the other amazing people who work there answer the phones.

We came to see them for our 16 year old catahoula blue heeler mix. They did an outstanding job emphasizing compassion and empathy while delivering excellent and knowledgeable service. Highly recommend.

Slater,Jordy and Lakey give Salava Vet and staff three wagging tails approval. Very clean airy environment with lots of natural light and easy to get to, as well as ample parking. A good life ended (RIP) for Slater and made a space for Marjiani (Mar-Johnny) This is the best Vet clinic by far for Farm/Ranch or just people with pets.

Love this vet. It is affordable and they take great care of your animals. My 14 year old chihuahua needed teeth removed and had to go under, she made it through with no problems. They truly love and treat each animal as their own. CHOOSE THIS VET.
